DURHAM, N.C. - Alyssa Thomas tied her career-high 26 points, Tianna Hawkins added 17, and Lynetta Kizer had 12 in the second half, but No. 7 Maryland fell at No. 5 Duke, 80-72, Sunday afternoon.
Thomas added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year. Anjale Barrett added seven assists with just one turnover for the Terrapins (18-2, 5-2 ACC).
Duke's Haley Peters had 22 and Chelsea Gray had 17 to lead five total Blue Devils (17-2, 6-0) in double figures.
Barrett sunk a three 11 seconds into the game to give Maryland the early lead. The Terps led through the first four minutes before trading baskets with Duke through most of the first half.
Maryland trailed by as much as 8 with 3:28 to play in the half, but used an 11-4 run, sparked by layup by Laurin Mincy, to trail just 44-43 at the break.
Duke came out of the gate in the second half and took an 11-point lead 13:27 off a 12-2 run that opened the period. The Terrapins chipped Duke's lead to 65-62 with 7:20 to play. A jumper by Kizer at 3:22 made it 71-68, but Gray hit a three seconds later to extend Duke's lead back to six.
Hawkins added three blocks and Thomas notched four steals.
The Terps were a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, led by Thomas with four made free throws.
Next, Maryland will return to College Park for two straight home games. The Terps will face Virginia Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on TerpsTV Premium.
Maryland is ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press rankings and No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches' poll.
