The Maryland men's tennis team earned a pair of doubles wins over No. 31 Oklahoma's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, but could not sustain the momentum into singles action as the Terps lost to the Sooners, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts.
Maryland (4-9, 1-2 ACC) opened the match in strong fashion. At No. 1 doubles, the Terps' 36th-ranked tandem of senior Maros Horny and junior John Collins raced out to a 6-1 lead on No. 18 Costin Paval and Dane Webb, and went on to win 8-3. For Collins and Horny, it is their fourth win over a ranked team this season.
Needing one more win to secure the doubles point, Maryland turned to its No. 2 team of junior Tommy Laine and freshman Vlad Stefan after the Sooners evened doubles play with a win at No. 3. In their first match against a ranked opponent, Laine and Stefan dispatched of No. 68 Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong, 8-6, to put the Terps in the lead.
In singles action, Oklahoma won at the No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions to secure the victory. For the Terps, Laine earned his sixth dual triumph of the season and third at the No. 6 spot with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win.
The Terps will complete their ACC schedule over the next month starting with a road trip to Atlanta, Ga. and Clemson, S.C. Maryland plays at Clemson on Friday, March 23 and takes on Georgia Tech on Sunday, March 25.
