ATLANTA, Ga. -
The Maryland men's tennis team became the first team to take the doubles point from No. 69 Georgia Tech since Feb. 25, but the Yellow Jackets responded in singles and defeated the Terps, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets had not dropped the doubles point since losing it against Florida State on Feb. 25, but 36th-ranked John Collins and Maros Horny upset fourth-ranked Kevin King and Juan Spir, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles to start the Terps off.
After Collins and Horny took care of King and Spir, juniors Andy Magee and Jesse Kiuru put the Terps up by one with an 8-6 defeat of Dusan Miljevic and Eduardo Segura at No. 3 doubles.
Tech drew even when ninth-ranked King defeated Horny at No. 1 singles, but the Terps regained the lead a short time later when freshman Vlad Stefan dispatched of 112th-ranked Juan Spir in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets once again tied the match with a victory at No. 6. Junior Tommy Laine responded for Maryland and won a three-set match over Seguara, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 to put the Terps up 3-2.
At No. 4, Collins dropped a three-set match to Juan Melian to bring the match all square.
Miljevic brought the victory home for Georgia Tech at No. 3. After Kiuru won the first set, 7-5, Miljevic bounced back to win the next two sets.
Maryland returns home Friday, March 30 to face No. 31 Florida State at 2:30 p.m.
