The Maryland men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and carried the momentum into singles action to defeat the 51st-ranked Miami Hurricanes, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts. It is the Terps (5-12, 2-5 ACC) first-ever victory over the Hurricanes.
"I am so pleased for the guys," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "We have obviously been struggling this year. We've played so many tight matches and they've never given up. They've never quit. I'm so happy for the guys. It's a big-time win."
Maryland got off to a fast start in doubles as No. 24 Maros Horny and John Collins dispatched of Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores, 8-3, and juniors Jesse Kiuru and Andy Magee defeated Marco Stancati and Mark Schanerman, 8-2, to secure the doubles point for the Terps. For Horny and Collins, it is their 12th victory of the season.
With the doubles victory in hand, freshman Vlad Stefan and junior Tommy Laine knocked off Diego Soto and Wilfredo Gonzalez to complete the sweep and improve Maryland's doubles record to 35-15 this spring.
Collins picked up the Terps' second point of the afternoon with a victory at the No. 5 position. The Bowie, Md., native cruised past Henrique Tsukamoto in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, for his eighth win of the year.
"John has been getting extra work in and it's just the belief factor," said Spencer. "In sports you don't know when it's going to turn, and it turned today. I am so happy for him. He got us over the line today."
Laine and Stefan clinched the victory for the Terps with nearly simultaneous wins at No. 6 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Laine defeated Victor Mauz in straight sets, while Stefan earned his third consecutive win by defeating Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-0.
The Terps are on the road next weekend. The team will face Wake Forest on Friday, April 6 at 3 p.m., and take on NC State on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
"I thought we were unfortunate not to get the win against Florida State," said Spencer. "I think this team is only going to get better. We'll think about Wake [Forest] and NC State tomorrow, but today we're really going to enjoy this one because it means a lot."
