Terps Beat Georgia Tech to Advance, 4-2

April 19, 2012
CARY, N.C. - The No. 59 Maryland men's tennis team defeated No. 63 Georgia Tech, 4-2, Thursday for the first time since 1990 to advance to the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships at Cary Tennis Park. With the victory, the Terps (8-14) face top seeded and second-ranked Virginia Friday at 9 a.m.
"I'm really excited for the guys," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "They really focused and did what they needed to do to get across the line today.
"It's a great feeling to beat a team we lost to in the regular season, and we are excited to play a great Virginia team tomorrow morning."
Maryland's win avenged a regular season loss to the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. And similar to the regular season meeting, the Terps took the doubles point. Freshman Vlad Stefan and junior Tommy Laine picked up the first win of the match with an 8-6 defeat of Juan Spir and Juan Melian on the No. 2 court, while on the first court 23rd-ranked Maros Horny and John Collins dispatched of Vikram Hundal and Sebastian Lopez, 9-7.
The Terps took a 2-0 lead when junior Tommy Laine won his eighth match in his last 10 outings with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Eduardo Mandarino on court No. 6.
The Yellow Jackets tied the match at two with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. But juniors Jesse Kiuru and Collins closed out the match with victories on No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Collins struck first with a straight-set defeat of Lopez and Kiuru clinched the win with a three-set defeat of Hundal.
The win is Maryland's first over the Yellow Jackets in ACC Tournament competition and set up a showdown with Virginia tomorrow at 9 a.m. Follow the match live at TheACC.com and get in-match updates through Twitter at @TerpsTennis.
