#2 UVa Knock Out Terps, 4-0

April 20, 2012
CARY, N.C. - Seeking its first appearance in the semifinals of the ACC Championship since 1986, the No. 59 Maryland men’s tennis team lost to No. 2 Virginia, 4-0, Friday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at Cary Tennis Park. It is the second consecutive season the Cavaliers have eliminated the Terps in the quarterfinal round.
“Virginia was too good today,” said head coach Kyle Spencer. “My hope is this isn’t our last match as a team, but we will have to wait to see what happens with the NCAA selection process. Nevertheless, I’m proud of what we have accomplished not only this season but over my three years at Maryland."
The Cavaliers got out of the gate quickly Friday morning with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim the team point. Virginia’s Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank knocked off juniors Andy Magee and Jesse Kiuru on No. 3, 8-3. Shortly thereafter, 18th-ranked Jarmere Jenkins and Drew Courtney defeated 23rd-ranked Maros Horny and John Collins by the same score.
The Terps (8-15) battled the Cavaliers in singles action, but Virginia’s depth proved to be a little too much. Fifth-ranked Jenkins knocked off Horny on the top court to put Virginia up by two before Courtney defeated Kiuru at No. 4 to increase the lead to three.
Top-ranked Frank closed out the match for the Cavs with a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Sergio Wyss.
The Terps will wait until Tuesday, May 1 to learn their NCAA Tournament fate. The individual tournament field will be announced the following day.
