GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Maryland senior Maros Horny and freshman Vlad Stefan have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Team, the league announced Thursday.
Including Horny and Stefan, 14 Maryland men's tennis players have been voted to the team all-time by the league's 12 head coaches. Horny and Stefan are the first Terrapins to earn all-conference honors since 2002, when Hairs Causevic was named to the team. It is the first time since 1986 Maryland had more than one representative.
Horny, a native of Zlate Moravce, Slovakia, has played on the No. 1 singles court for the majority of the season and competed against 11 nationally-ranked players this spring including three players currently in the top 10.
In doubles, Horny and junior John Collins are 15-8 in dual action and ranked 26th nationally. The tandem is 6-3 against nationally-ranked opponents this spring including victories over second-ranked Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech, 11th-ranked Costin Paval and Dane Webb of Oklahoma, and 20th-ranked Joey Burkhardt and Jose Hernandez of North Carolina.
Stefan, a native of Bucharest, Romania, became the first Terrapin men's tennis player to earn ACC Player of the Week honors since 2002 on April 17. Stefan is currently ranked 94th nationally and is 10-9 this season. His win over 88th-ranked Brennan Boyajian keyed the Terps' upset of 17th-ranked North Carolina marking Maryland's first win over the Tar Heels since 1990.
Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins was voted ACC Player of the Year and the Cavaliers' Mitchell Frank was voted ACC Freshman of the Year. Click here to view the conference's full release.
