Terps Drop Close Match to Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Juniors John Collins and Tommy Laine won in straight sets, but the No. 75 Maryland men's tennis team fell in the final match to Wake Forest, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Terps (5-13, 2-6 ACC) are back in action tomorrow at No. 36 NC State at 2 p.m.
Laine extended his winning streak to five with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Alex Tsai at No. 6, and Collins won his second consecutive match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sam Wells at No. 5.
Senior Maros Horny improved to 4-4 in ACC action with a come-from-behind victory over Danny Kreyman at No. 1. Horny dropped the opening set 6-4, but rallied to take the second and third set, 6-3.
The Demon Deacons' David Hopkins defeated Vlad Stefan in the final match of the afternoon to secure the win.
In doubles, juniors Jesse Kiuru and Andy Magee earned the Terps' lone win. The tandem knocked off Conner Sherwood and Alex Tsai, 8-3, to improve to 7-1 in conference competition.
