RALEIGH, N.C. - One day after a close loss to Wake Forest, junior John Collins secured an important conference win for the No. 75 Maryland men’s tennis team over No. 36 NC State with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles Saturday afternoon at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Stadium. Collins’ win locked up a 4-3 Terps victory over the Wolfpack to hand NC State only its second loss at home this season.

After the Terps (6-13, 3-6 ACC) fell in the final match against the Demon Deacons Friday, Collins ensured there would not be a repeat Saturday. After junior Tommy Laine won his sixth consecutive match at No. 6 singles to tie the match at three, Collins rebounded from a second-set loss to clinch the victory for the Terps with a 6-3 triumph in the third set over Robbie Mudge.

"This is an amazing effort for a team that lost a heartbreaking match less than 24 hours ago,” said head coach Kyle Spencer. “To come back and pull off the upset against a highly-ranked team on the road shows the character and pride of this team.”

The Terps earned the doubles point for the sixth time in the past eight matches to open the afternoon. No. 24 John Collins and Maros Horny responded from a disappointing match in Winston-Salem and dispatched of Julian Sullivan and Sean Weber, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Shortly thereafter, freshman Vlad Stefan and Laine knocked off Jaime Pulgar and Mudge, 8-4, at No. 2.

The Wolfpack rallied with victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to take a 3-1 lead. But junior Jesse Kiuru kept the Terps alive with a straight-set win at No. 4, and Laine improved to 10-6 this spring with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Dave Thomson at No. 6. Collins finished off NC State with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 defeat of Mudge.

The Terps return home for their final homestand of the season Friday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. against No. 7 Duke, and will face No. 21 North Carolina on Sunday, April 15 at noon.
