SKILLMAN, N.J. - Maryland men's tennis head coach Kyle Spencer was voted the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Monday.
This season, Spencer led the Terps to four ACC wins -- the school's most since 1990 -- including the program's first-ever victory over Miami and its first defeat of North Carolina in 22 years. Spencer is the first Maryland men's head coach to win the award.
"I'm honored by the committee's selection," said Spencer. "This award is shared with [assistant coach] Evan [Clark] and all of the guys in the program who believed in my vision for Maryland Tennis. I'm really happy the team's achievements over the last few years have been recognized."
Under Spencer's guidance, senior Maros Horny and freshman Vlad Stefan became the first Terps to earn All-ACC honors since 2002, while Stefan was named Co-ACC Player of the Week for April 17, becoming the first Terrapin to win the award since 2002.
Horny and junior John Collins earned a bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship. The tandem, ranked 26th nationally, is Maryland's first participants in the NCAA tournament since 2008.
