INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Senior Maros Horny and junior John Collins were selected to compete in the doubles draw at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee announced Wednesday.
The doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22) with 32 doubles teams competing for the national championship. The University of Georgia will serve as host.
Horny and Collins, ranked 26th nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, are the first Terrapins to qualify for the doubles championship since 2008 when All-Americans Boris Fetbroyt and Andrew Orban reached the round of 16. This season, the tandem is 15-8 with six victories over ranked opponents including a win over second-ranked Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech.
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola of Ohio State are the top seed in the bracket followed by USC's Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz. Georiga Tech's King and Spir are the three seed and Stanford's Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher are the fourth seed.
All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games will be used for all matches.
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have a minimum of 10 completed doubles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
