June 28, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maros Horny and Vlad Stefan of the University of Maryland men's tennis team have been named to the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Tennis Team, the league announced Thursday.
Horny, who completed his eligibility this past season, is a two-time honoree, while Stefan was selected in his first season in College Park.
An agriculture and natural resource economics and finance major, Horny capped his career at Maryland with an All-ACC campaign playing primarily at the No.1 singles position. Horny paired with John Collins in doubles and became the first Maryland tandem to qualify for the NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championship since 2008.
Stefan, a native of Bucharest, Romania, completed the spring season with a 10-9 record playing primarily at the No. 2 position and earned a spot on the All-ACC team. After defeating then-26th ranked Chris Mengel of Duke and North Carolina's Brennan Boyajian in April, Stefan jumped to No. 88 in the ITA rankings and earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
