Mission

The mission of the Athletic Council is to facilitate collaboration and partnership between ICA, campus leadership, and the faculty to strengthen institutional control and establish a culture of excellence within Maryland Athletics. Faculty and campus leadership participation enhances the overall integrity of ICA in important areas such as academic performance, rules compliance, and the alignment of ICA with the university's overall mission.

Purpose

The purpose of the Athletic Council is to assist ICA in developing and maintaining the best possible intercollegiate athletic program consistent with the values and academic standards of the institution. The Athletic Council is the primary body that advises the President on all matters related to ICA. It is responsible for monitoring and informing the progress of ICA within the framework of the institution and helping review and improve athletic policies and procedures. The Council, on behalf of the President, provides the necessary faculty input and participation to ensure compliance and institutional control of ICA as required by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Big Ten Conference, and the University of Maryland. The Council does not execute policy but serves to influence policy development and administration.
