Maryland Tabbed Ninth in Early Preseason Poll

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland women's soccer team has been picked to finish ninth in the nation, and second in the Mid-Atlantic Region behind Virginia, according to an early preseason poll done by Soccer Buzz, a publication based in Washington D.C.

The Terrapins return eight starters from last year's team that advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, and which compiled a 19-5-2 record. Headlining this year's squad are juniors Emmy Harbo and Keri Sarver. Harbo set the team single-season record for goals in a season with 21, while Sarver set the team single-season record for assists with 15. Both players shattered the team record for total points in a season, with Sarver scoring 47 and Harbo with 45.

Maryland's 1997 schedule is one of the toughest in the nation. Sixteen of the Terp's 20 opponents appeared in the 1996 NCAA Tournament. The schedule includes NCAA champion North Carolina at Ludwig Field on October 10, and Final Four participant Santa Clara at George Mason on October 3.

Maryland begins its 1997 campaign on Monday, Sept. 1 versus Wright State at Ludwig Field on the campus of the University of Maryland.
