THIS IS THE NCAA
The NCAA annually administers 81 championships in 22
sports for both men and women. More than 21,000 student-athletes compete
annually for the coveted title of "National Collegiate Champion." They
represent America's colleges and universities from the largest state
institutions to small private and church-affiliated colleges.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the organization through
which the nation's colleges and universities speak and act on athletics
matters at the national level. It is a voluntary association of more
than 1,100 senior colleges and universities, conferences and
organizations that have joined to address concerns of a regional or
national scope and to provide for the sound administration of
intercollegiate athletics. As varied as these groups are, they share an
abiding belief that they want their athletics programs to be an integral
part of their educational mission.
Founded in 1906, the NCAA has grown dramatically in the past 40 years,
with more than 700 new members joining since 1950.
The NCAA today is a multifaceted organization. In addition to
administering championships, the Association is involved in a wide range
of programs and services. We would like to tell you more about them.
