Stokes Sets School Record For Assists In A Game
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore point guard Terrell Stokes set a school record with 14 assists to lead Maryland to a 93-76 victory over intra-state rival Towson State at Cole Field House today. Stokes's 14 assists bettered by one Keith Gatlin's former school record of 13, which he set versus Virginia on January 20, 1984. In addition to his career-high 14 assists, Stokes grabbed a career-high six rebounds and was credited with a career-high six steals.
Maryland improves to 2-0 on the season while Towson State falls to 2-2. The victory was Maryland's school record and current ACC best 48th consecutive non-conference home victory.
Senior All-America Candidate Keith Booth led Maryland in the scoring column with a season-high 22 points and eight rebounds while sophomore center Obinna Ekezie scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Terps placed five players in double figure scoring for the second consecutive game and ninth time in the last two seasons.
It was Booth who paced the Terps to an early lead as he scored 14 first-half points to boost Maryland to a 57-34 halftime lead. The Terps led from the start as they scored 17 of the game's first 20 points, 32 of the first 47 and held a 23-point lead at the intermission. The 23-point lead was their largest of the game.
Senior Ralph Biggs' 12 second half points led a second half comeback which saw the Tigers close Maryland's lead to 12 points with just over 11 minutes remaining. But the Terps outscored the Tigers 24-21 to close the game. The Terps have never lost to the Tigers and now lead the series 12-0.
Biggs led Towson State with 20 points while Ryan Lexer scored 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds.
