Booth Leads Maryland Past Georgia Tech
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Keith Booth scored 15 of his 26 points in the second half
as 14th-ranked Maryland pulled away for a 76-68 Atlantic Coast Conference
victory over Georgia Tech.
Laron Profit added 12 points for the Terrapins (20-6, 9-4 ACC),
who moved into a tie with second-place Wake Forest in the
conference after the Demon Deacons were beaten at North
Carolina.
Matt Harpring scored 19 points and Michael Maddox added 18 for
Georgia Tech (9-14, 3-10), which has lost three straight games
and five of its last six. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-4 at home
in ACC play and are five games below .500 for the first time
since February 20th, 1982, when an 87-78 loss to Duke also
dropped them to 9-14. That Georgia Tech team finished 10-16 in
coach Bobby Cremins' first season.
Maryland swept the season series, but still trails in the
all-time series, 28-18. The Terps reached the 20-win mark for
the second time in three seasons as coach Gary Williams improved
to 6-11 versus the Yellow Jackets.
Maryland erased a 39-38 halftime deficit with a 9-0 burst in the
first 3:11 of the second half. Profit capped the run with a
dunk, giving the Terrapins a 47-41 lead.
But Georgia Tech answered with an 11-4 tear and took its final
lead when Kevin Morris hit a three-pointer to make it 52-51 at
the 11:19 mark.
Maryland countered as Rodney Elliott and Booth each made two
free throws and Booth followed with a layup to make it 57-52.
Harpring hit two foul shots for the Yellow Jackets, but Profit
made two free throws and Booth converted a three-point play to
give the Terps a 62-54 bulge with 8:02 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets closed within 62-58 less than 40 seconds
later, but Booth and Terrell Stokes had layups before Matt
Kovarik added one of his own to extend Maryland's advantage to
68-58 with 4:34 left. Georgia Tech got no closer than seven the
rest of the way.
The Terps shot 57 percent (12-of-21) from the field in the
second half and 49 percent (27-of-55) overall. Sarunas
Jasokevicius also had 12 points and Obinna Ekezie added 10 for
Maryland.
Georgia Tech, which failed to score 70 points for the ninth
straight game, shot 11-of-37 (30 percent) from the field in the
second half and 36 percent (24-of-67) overall. Gary Saunders
scored 15 points and Morris added 14 for the Yellow Jackets, who
were 9-of-33 from three-point range.
