Terps Travel to Winston-Salem to Face Conference Rival Wake Forest

TERPS TRAVEL TO WAKE FOREST TO PLAY FOR SECOND ACC WIN
Maryland travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to play the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University in search of its second consecutive ACC victory and third overall victory in the last four weeks. The Terps defeated Temple (Sept. 27) and Duke (Oct. 4) for their first two victories of the season and look to give Head Coach Ron Vanderlinden his third career victory today on Tobacco Road. Maryland most recently won back-to-back conference games last season when it defeated Wake Forest (Oct. 19) in Byrd Stadium and Duke (Oct. 26) in Durham. The Terps also won consecutive conference games during the 1990 season as they defeated the Demon Deacons (Oct. 13) at home and Blue Devils (Oct. 20) on the road. Maryland holds a 1-1 slate on the road this season having won at Temple and lost to Florida State in Tallahassee.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Maryland is looking to win its ninth consecutive game at Groves Stadium. The Terps have won every game played between these two teams in Winston-Salem since the 1981 season. The Terps have not lost in Groves Stadium since October 20, 1979 when the Deacons took a 25-17 decision. Maryland is the winningest opponent in Groves Stadium with 12 victories; North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia have each won 11 times in the stadium since it opened in 1968.

1 True freshman LaMont Jordan, who enters today's game versus Wake Forest with a team leading 327 yards, is looking to become the first freshman since Steve Atkins in 1975 to lead the Terps in rushing.

CUMMINGS SURPASSES 3,000 CAREER PASSING YARDS
Senior co-captain Brian Cummings became only the 10th quarterback in school history to surpass the 3,000 career passing yards plateau as he threw for 197 yards against West Virginia. Cummings has now thrown for 3,178 yards and enters this afternoon's game ranked in 8th place all-time in school history. Cummings is entering into select company with five of the seven quarterbacks ahead of him currently playing or having enjoyed National Football League careers.

Senior co-captain Brian Cummings completed 15 of 24 pass for 197 yards against West Virginia. He has now completed 264 of 452 career passes for 3,178 yards entering today's game versus Wake Forest. He ranks within the top ten in three categories in school history.

RODGERS RETURNS TO FORM
Senior tailback Buddy Rodgers accounted for 103 all-purpose yards and one touchdown against West Virginia. He gained 41 yards on 11 carries (3.7 yards per carry) and caught a career-high three passes for a career-high 62 yards in receptions. His 34-yard pass reception from Brian Cummings in the fourth quarter was also his personal career best. Rodgers' 11 carries were his first since Sept. 13 when he carried the ball six times against Florida State.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Senior Buddy Rodgers, a Doak Walker Award candidate as the nation's top running back, needs only 234 yards to surpass Bren Lowrey and become the 11th all-time leading career rusher in school history. In addition, he is in striking distance of becoming a member of the school's top-10 list.

THE KO KID
Junior linebacker Kendall Ogle, a Butkus Award nominee, recorded a team-leading 13 tackles against West Virginia and is the team leader in tackles entering today game with 74. He averages 12.4 tackles per game. As a sophomore, Ogle recorded 74 total tackles for the season to place third on the team behind only Eric Barton and Eric Hicks. Included in Ogle's 13 tackles against West Virginia was one tackle for a loss of three yards and one assisted tackle on special teams. Ogle recorded a career-high 15 tackles against Duke on October 4.

TIGHT END HULL CATCHES FOUR PASSES FOR 40 YARDS
Redshirt freshman tight end Mike Hull caught a career-high four passes for a career-high 40 yards against West Virginia. In catching four passes from Brian Cummings, Hull nearly doubled his season reception number (he entered the game with five receptions). Against the Mountaineers, Hull had more receiving yards, 40, than he did in his first five games, 36. He also scored his first career touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Cummings in the fourth quarter to draw the Terps to within 24-14 with 11:20 remaining in the contest.

HULL'S TOUCHDOWN WAS FIRST BY A TIGHT END SINCE 1989
Redshirt freshman Mike Hull's eight-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter against West Virginia was the first by a Maryland tight end since David Carr's 54-yard touchdown catch from Neil O'Donnell on October 28, 1989 against North Carolina.

PASSES CAUGHT BY TIGHT ENDS
Redshirt freshman Mike Hull has caught 9 passes for 76 yards and enters today's game versus Wake Forest as the Terps third leading receiver. Hull has combined with redshirt freshman Tim Brown for 10 catches this season - double the number of catches by Maryland's tight end corps in 1994, 1995 and 1996 combined.

CLIFF HANGER
Redshirt sophomore Clifton Crosby returned to the line-up for the first time against West Virginia after missing the first five games of the season with an eye injury. Crosby suffered a laceration to his eye from a shoulder pad blade on the first day the Terps practiced in pads during pre-season camp. Crosby recorded three tackles on 50 total plays.

RETURNING HOME
Redshirt senior Anthony Jenkins will make a homecoming today as the Terps travel to play Wake Forest. Jenkins hails from Winston-Salem and attended West Forsyth High School.

SPECIAL PLAY ON SPECIAL TEAMS
The Terps continue to create turnovers on a consistent basis. Against West Virginia, Maryland forced a fumble on kickoff coverage. Sophomore Todd Stewart registered his first career forced fumble, while sophomore Kenny Rogers gained his first career fumble recovery. In marked the second time this season that the Terps special teams had created a turnover. Redshirt senior Eric Ogbogu recovered a fumble against Temple on a muffed punt return. The Terps also tackled the Owls punter to set up a score.

Maryland established a season-high as it accumulated 19 first downs against West Virginia. It marked the most by the Terps since they gained 17 against Ohio in the season opener.

TRUE FRESHMAN KICKERS
True freshman Brian Kopka is one of only three players who has kicked as s true freshman at Maryland. He joined former Terps Jess Atkinson and Dan Plocki when he lined-up to kick a point after touchdown against Temple on September 27. Kopka was successful on his first career extra point attempt in the second quarter and connected on his second attempt in the third quarter against Temple. In addition, Kopka was called up to kick off twice against Temple - once in the second quarter and to begin the second half. Both of his kicks went into and out of the end zone and were not returned by the Owls.

A NOTE ON THE FRESHMAN KICKERS
Maryland's trio of true freshmen kickers -- Brian Kopka, Dan Plocki and Jess Atkinson -- have combined to kick 37 consecutive extra points. Kopka, who is perfect on five attempts, and Plocki, who was perfect on 20 attempts during the 1985 season, are joined by Atkinson who was successful on his final 12 attempts of his freshman season.

KOPKA NEARLY TIES SCHOOL RECORD FOR TRUE FRESHMAN KICKERS
True freshman kicker Brian Kopka nearly tied the school record for longest field goal by a true freshman when he kicked a 47-yarder against Duke. EDWARDS JOINS TERPS ALL-TIME TOP 10
Redshirt junior punter Russell Edwards punted three times against West Virginia to bring his career total to 121. His 121 punts places him 9th all-time at the University of Maryland. Dan DeArmas (1988-91) is the career leader with 268 career punts.
