Terps Play Host to West Virginia
Try for First Three-Game Winning Streak Since 1995

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland will play host to West Virginia in its final non-conference game of the season tonight in Byrd Stadium in search of its first three-game winning streak since the beginning of the 1995 season. Maryland most recently won three consecutive games as it opened the 1995 season with four consecutive victories. One of those victories was a 31-17 victory over West Virginia on September 16. The victory in 1995 over the Mountaineers gave the Terps their first 3-0 start to a season since the 1986 season. Maryland has won four of the last six games versus West Virginia which have been played in Byrd Stadium and lead the all-time series 9-7-1 in games which have been played in College Park.

Junior Eric Barton, who is ranked second in the ACC in tackles with 64, was added to the Butkus Award watch list last week. Barton recorded 11 tackles against Duke to run his double digit tackle streak to six consecutive games. He has been credited with at least 10 tackles in each of the Terps' five games this season and the 1996 season finale against Florida State.
OGBOGU LEAVES DEVILS FEELING BLUE
Senior defensive end Eric Ogbogu recorded four tackles, one fumble recovery, one caused fumble and one pass broken up against Duke. His pass break up led to Paul Jackson's third quarter interception giving him a hand in all three of the turnovers caused by the Terps defense.
OGLE WITH A CAREER-HIGH 15 TACKLES
Junior linebacker Kendall Ogle, a Butkus Award candidate, recorded a career-high 15 tackles against Duke. He was credited with nine solo stops and six assisted tackles.
HATALA'S CATCH IS FIFTH LONGEST IN SCHOOL HISTORY
True freshman Jason Hatala's 76-yard touchdown reception against Duke on the first play from scrimmage Saturday night was the fifth longest reception in school history and longest ever by a freshman receiver.

CUMMINGS' PASS TO HATALA WAS HIS CAREER LONG
Senior co-captain Brian Cummings' 76-yard touchdown pass to Jason Hatala on the first play of scrimmage against Duke was the longest completion of his Maryland career. It marked the longest completion by a Maryland quarterback since Scott Milanovich hooked up with Jermaine Lewis for an 80 yard completion against West Virginia on Sept. 18, 1993.

TERPS IN THE FIRST QUARTER
Entering today's game versus West Virginia, the Terps are outscoring their opponents, 21-17, in the first quarter of the first five games of the season. The Terps have not allowed a first quarter point in three consecutive games and in four of the five games this season. Only Florida State has been able to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter against the Terps' defense this season.

SECOND LONGEST NON-CONFERENCE MATCH-UP IN SERIES ANNALS
Today's meeting of the Terrapins and the Mountaineers marks the 35th game between the two schools. It is Maryland's second longest non-conference match-up for the Terps. The series, which is tied 16-16-2, trails only Maryland's 37 meetings with Penn State. Maryland and West Virginia have met every year since 1980.

JORDAN ENTERING UNCHARTED TERRITORY
Tailback LaMont Jordan, who enters today's game versus West Virginia ranked sixth in the ACC in rushing, became the first true freshman to lead Maryland in rushing in consecutive games since Bren Lowrey led the 1986 Terps against North Carolina and Penn State.

KOPKA KICKS THREE FIELD GOALS/ONE PAT AGAINST DUKE
True freshman Brian Kopka's 36-yard field goal in the second quarter against Duke Saturday was the first field goal of his career. It came on the first attempt of his career. He became the first true freshman since 1985 to kick a field goal and only the third true freshman in school history to kick a field goal. Kopka was also successful on his only point after touchdown attempt. He kicked two successful PAT's against Temple on September 27.

True freshman Brian Kopka is one of only three players who have kicked as true freshman at Maryland. He joined former Terps Jess Atkinson and Dan Plocki when he lined-up to kick a point after touchdown against Temple on September 27. Kopka was successful on his first career extra point attempt in the second quarter and connected on his second attempt in the third quarter against Temple. In addition, Kopka was called up to kick off twice against Temple - once in the second quarter and to begin the second half. Both of his kicks went into and out of the end zone and were not returned by the Owls.

RODGERS NAMED TO DOAK WALKER AWARD LIST
Senior tailback Buddy Rodgers, who has accumulated 117 all-purpose yards and one touchdown this season (66 rushing/32 receiving/19 kickoff return yards) is a candidate for the Dr. Pepper/Doak Walker Award. The Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 by a partnership of Southern Methodist University and GTE to recognize and celebrate the goodness in college athletics. The partnership established the Doak Walker Award, "The National Running Back Award." In 1996, Dr. Pepper joined SMU and GTE in the partnership.

CUMMINGS, E. HICKS AND OGBOGU NAMED AS CAPTAINS
Seniors Brian Cummings, Eric Hicks and Eric Ogbogu were chosen by their teammates to serve as captains for the 1997 season. The captains were selected Friday, August 29. Cummings is a starter for the third consecutive season at quarterback, while Hicks and Ogbogu have been mainstays on the defensive line since their arrival together in 1994.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Senior Buddy Rodgers, a Doak Walker Award candidate as the nation's top running back, needs only 15 yards to surpass Tommy Neal and become the 12th all-time leading career rusher in school history. In addition, he is in striking distance of becoming a member of the school's top-10 list.

Johnny Holliday, in his 19th season as the Voice of the Terps, handles the play-by-play while Ken Broo joins the broadcast team this season as the color analyst. WBAL (1090-AM) serves as the flagship station for the 12-station network. The Terps can be heard on WJFK - FM (106.7) and WINX - AM (1600) in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Ron Vanderlinden will be among the nine ACC coaches featured on the weekly teleconference each Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Coach Vanderlinden can be heard from 11:40-11:50.
