TERPS PLAY HOST TO DUKE AFTER DEFEATING TEMPLE
Maryland will look to establish its first winning streak of the Ron Vanderlinden era as it plays host to Duke tonight. The Terps gained the first victory of the Ron Vanderlinden era as they defeated Tempois on Aug. 31, 1996.

Sophomore Lewis Sanders recorded a career-high three interceptions against Temple. The school and Atlantic Coast Conference record is four in a single game by Lendell Jones against Duke on October 23, 1982. Jones is tied with two other players in ACC history.

UNDERWOOD'S CAREER NIGHT AGAINST TEMPLE
Redshirt senior Brian Underwood gained a career high 114 yards on 18 carries (6.3 yards per carry) and scored a career-high two touchdowns as Maryland defeated Temple, 24-21, Saturday night in Philadelphia. It marked the first time during Underwoodis career that he had broken the 100-yard barrier; his previous career-best single game rushing effort was 92 yards against Tulane on September 2, 1995. His 37-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against the Owls was the longest carry of his career, eclipsing his previous best of 35 yards, also against Tulane in 1995.

INITIAL CARRIES FOR JORDAN, UNDERWOOD WERE FOR MINUS YARDS
In rushing for 139 and 114 yards respectively, true freshman LaMont Jordan and redshirt senior Brian Underwood began their days against Temple in a very adverse way. Jordanis first carry of the day went for a loss of three yards. Underwoodis first carry, though nullified by a defensive penalty, was credited for minus three yards.
MARYLAND VERSUS DUKE - THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Maryland leads the all-time series versus Duke by a 23-17 mark. The Terps have won 10 of the 14 games which have been played here in College Park. The series began in 1932 and the Terps and the Blue Devils have met each season since 1976. Although Maryland and Duke were charter members of the ACC in 1953, they did not meet as ACC foes until 1957. The Terps have won eight of the last 10 games played versus Duke since 1977 in Byrd Stadium.
MARYLAND AGAINST DUKE - LAST SEASON
Maryland defeated Duke, 22-19, last season on October 26 in Durham. The Terps 59 rushing attempts and 259 yards were the most by any ACC team versus the Blue Devils during the 1996 season. In addition, Buddy Rodgersi 176 rushing yards was the most yielded by the Duke defense to any individual rusher during the season.
DOUBLE 100-YARD RUSHING PERFORMANCE
The double 100-yard rushing performances by true freshman LaMont Jordan and redshirt senior Brian Underwood marked the seventh time in school history that two Terps had rushed for 100 yards or more in the same game. The last time it happened was on October 19, 1996 against Wake Forest, as then true freshman Harold Westley (120 yards) and then junior Buddy Rodgers (106) led Maryland to a 52-0 victory over the Demon Deacons.

Junior Eric Barton led the Terps in tackles with 10 against Temple. He has led or shared the tackling lead in three of the Terpsi first four games. In addition, his 10 tackles stretched his consecutive games streak with double digit tackles to five. He has at least 10 tackles in each game this season.

KOPKA BECOMES ONLY THIRD TRUE FRESHMAN TO KICK AT MARYLAND
True freshman Brian Kopka became only the third true freshman in school history to kick for the Terps as he was successful on two point after touchdown attempts and recorded two unreturnable kickoffs against Temple. Kopka joins only Jess Atkinson (kicked as a freshman in 1981) and Dan Plocki (kicked in 1985) as players who kicked in their inaugural years in College Park.

True freshman Brian Kopka joined only former Terps Jess Atkinson and Dan Plocki as players who have kicked as true freshman at Maryland. Kopka was successful on his first career extra point attempt in the second quarter and connected on his second attempt in the third quarter against Temple. In addition, Kopka was called up to kick off twice - once in the second quarter and to begin the second half. Both of his kicks went into and out of the end zone and were not returned by the Owls.

A NOTE ON THE FRESHMAN KICKERS
Maryland's trio of true freshmen kickers -- Brian Kopka, Dan Plocki and Jess Atkinson -- have combined to kick 34 consecutive extra points. Kopka, who is perfect on two attempts, and Plocki, who was perfect on 20 attempts during the 1985 season, are joined by Atkinson who was successful on his final 12 attempts of his freshman season.

MIRROR IMAGE OF NORTHWESTERN?
Maryland's victory over Temple gave Ron Vanderlinden the first victory of his head coaching career. Vanderlinden, who has been associated with incredible turnarounds at both Colorado and Northwestern maybe following a similar pattern from his first season at Northwestern. After falling in their first three games of the Barnett-Vanderlinden era in 1992, the Wildcats defeated Purdue in game four for their first victory. The Terps victory in their fourth game marked a similar story line.
NO FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS
Maryland's defense held Temple to no field goal attempts. It marked the second time this season (also against Ohio) that the Terpsi defense had held their opponent without a field goal attempt.
TERPS FORCE SEVEN TURNOVERS AGAINST TEMPLE
Maryland forced a season high seven turnovers against Temple. The Terps were credited with four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

"Temple is a very good football team and we knew that we would have our hands full. I told our team that this game would go down to the wire.
What we had to do was believe and have faith in each other, hang together and find a way to win it and not look up for 60 minutes. I believe we did that.
I was really proud of the fact that weive got some guys stepping up and making plays. I have always believed that players make plays.
I think Lewis Sanders has demonstrated that heis a player and he continues to make plays. Also, Eric Barton and Eric Ogbogu are very capable of making plays.
I am really proud of both of our cornerbacks - and particularly Troy Davidson at the end of the game. He made a big time play near the end of the game. I have been impressed with the way those two players (Davidson and Washington) have taken their share of lumps and yet continue to get better and work and not get their heads down.
LaMont Jordan has a gear that he can go to. Itis a good gear and I like that gear. He has shown toughness, speed and the ability to make plays.
I am also really proud of the way that Brian Underwood has played. I thought he ran well. I thought that he ran hard and was difficult to tackle.
When Temple scored early in the second half and our offense answered with a touchdown -- I thought that was an impressive drive and showed maturity by our offense. i

CUMMINGS CONTINUES TO DIRECT MARYLAND TOWARD THE ENDZONE
Redshirt senior Brian Cummings directed scoring drives of three plays (first quarter touchdown), five plays (second quarter field goal), three plays (second quarter touchdown) and nine plays (third quarter touchdown) versus Temple. Though Marylandis longest semi-drive of the game (19 plays, 8:20) did not produce any points, Cummings helped keep the Terpsi defense off of the Franklin Field Astroturf until the late stages of the first quarter. Maryland held a 10:48 - 4:12 time of possession in the first quarter. Maryland has held a time of possession advantage in each of its four games this season and holds a near two minute average time of possession advantage for the season.

Redshirt freshman Moises Cruz begins tonightis game with 11 catches for 139 yards. He has already become only the 16th freshman in school history to amass at least 10 receptions in a season and is one of only 16 freshmen to have gained 100 or more yards in receptions during his first season. The school records for freshmen receivers are 58 catches and 509 yards by Frank Wycheck in 1990. Wycheck currently plays for the Tennessee Oilers of the NFL.

Senior tailback Buddy Rodgers, who has accumulated 117 all-purpose yards and one touchdown this season (66 rushing/32 receiving/19 kickoff return yards) is a candidate for the Dr. Pepper/Doak Walker Award. The Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 by a partnership of Southern Methodist University and GTE to recognize and celebrate the goodness in college athletics. The partnership established the Doak Walker Award, iThe National Running Back Award.i In 1996, Dr. Pepper joined SMU and GTE in the partnership.
CUMMINGS, E. HICKS AND OGBOGU NAMED AS CAPTAINS
Seniors Brian Cummings, Eric Hicks and Eric Ogbogu were chosen by their teammates to serve as captains for the 1997 season. The captains were selected Friday, August 29. Cummings is a starter for the third consecutive season at quarterback, while Hicks and Ogbogu have been mainstays on the defensive line since their arrival together in 1994.

Senior Buddy Rodgers, a Doak Walker Award candidate as the nationis top running back, needs only 15 yards to surpass Tommy Neal and become the 12th all-time leading career rusher in school history. In addition, he is in striking distance of becoming a member of the schoolis top-10 list.

OGLE ON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST
Redshirt junior linebacker Kendall Ogle, who has recorded 36 tackles in the first three games of the season (14 against Ohio, 13 against Florida State and nine against North Carolina), is a candidate for the Butkus Award. Ogle recorded a career-high 75 tackles in 1996 and was recently named as the 18th-best linebacker in the nation by Lindyis Magazine. His 75 stops last season placed him third on the team and he recorded a career-best 14 tackles against West Virginia. Ogle is one of 52 players named to the initial watch list for the Butkus Award presented annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. to the nationis outstanding collegiate linebacker. The list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on October 16 and three finalists will be named on November 13. The winner will be announced on December 13 in Orlando.
