JORDAN ON THE CUSP OF RECORD FOR TRUE FRESHMAN RUNNERS True freshman LaMont Jordan, the ACC Rookie of the Year candidate, enters today's game versus N.C. State with 466 rushing yards and needs only 26 yards to set the all-time Maryland record for rushing yards gained by a freshman. Jordan is chasing Steve Atkins, who gained 491 yards during the 1975 season. Atkins (1975-78) gained a career total of 2,971 yards which places him second on Maryland's all-time rushing list behind only Charlie Wysocki (3,317 yards, 1978-81).

JORDAN ON THE TRUE FRESHMAN TERPS RUSHING CHARTS True freshman LaMont Jordan, the ACC Rookie of the Year Favorite, rushed for a career-high and Maryland true freshman record 135 yards on a career-high and true freshman record 21 carries against Temple on September 27. CUMMINGS TO JOIN TERP QUARTERBACK ELITE Senior quarterback Brian Cummings, who has completed 25 of 46 (54.3 percent) of his passes for 250 yards in the last two weeks, enters today's game versus N.C. State ranked in the top five in three different Maryland passing categories. He is ranked fifth in career completions (316), fifth in career attempts (545) and fifth in career yards passing (3,717). CUMMINGS TOUCHDOWNS ARE UP; INTERCEPTIONS DOWN Senior quarterback Brian Cummings has thrown six touchdown passes and a career-low tying four interceptions through the first nine games of the season. Cummings's six touchdown passes are only one away from his single season personal best of seven which he threw during the 1996 season. His four interceptions are tied with his career-low during the 1995 season. Cummings is in his third year as Maryland's starting quarterback and though he played quarterback during his redshirt freshman season of 1994, he did not throw a pass.

CUMMINGS ESTABLISHES PERSONAL SINGLE-SEASON BESTS Senior quarterback Brian Cummings has completed a single season personal best 126 passes in a single season personal-best 206 attempts for a single season personal-best 1,397 yards this season. He had never before completed more than 100 passes (previous best 98 in 1996) or attempted more than 200 passes (previous best 173 in 1995). In addition, he had never passed for more than 1,200 yards (previous best 1,193 yards in 1995) in a single season during his career.

CUMMINGS AMONG ACC'S TOTAL OFFENSIVE LEADERS Senior quarterback Brian Cummings is ranked eighth in the ACC in total offensive yards per game with a 137.1 yards per game average.

HATALA CONTRIBUTING FROM KICKOFF RETURN POSITION True freshman Jason Hatala became only the fifth true freshman in school history to record 100 or more kickoff return yards when he returned a career-high five kickoffs for a career-high 104 yards against Virginia. Hatala, who was playing his first game as Maryland's primary kick returner, had two kickoff returns of 20 yards and one each of 13, 25 and 26 yards. He became the first true freshman since Jermaine Lewis in 1992 to amass 100 or more yards in kickoff returns in a single game

HOLDING OFF THE CAVALIERS VAUNTED DEFENSE The Virginia defense, which had intercepted at least one pass in 46 of the last 48 games entering Saturday's game was held without an interception against Maryland.

MASTROLE SEES FIRST EXTENDED PLAYING TIME OF SEASON Redshirt sophomore Ken Mastrole completed three passes in 11 attempts for 47 yards against Virginia. It was the fifth time Mastrole had seen action this season and he completed a season-high 25 yard pass to Kendrick Walton in the fourth quarter.

BARTON AND OGLE SURPASS 100 TACKLES Junior linebackers Eric Barton and Kendall Ogle enter today's game tied with a career-high 112 tackles each. Barton recorded 11 against Virginia while Ogle led the team with 13 stops. It marked the ninth time (every game this season) that either Barton or Ogle had led the Terps in tackles. It also marks the first time that two players have recorded 100 or more tackles in the same season since Scott Saylor and Glenn Page both surpassed the century mark in 1988.

SEASON HIGH SACKS BY TERPS' DEFENSE Maryland's defense tied its season-high of four sacks against Virginia. The team also recorded four sacks against Florida State, which is currently ranked third in the nation. Juniors Lewis Sanders (one sack - minus 12 yards), Kendall Ogle (one sack - minus six yards) and sophomore Delbert Cowsette (two sacks - minus 12 yards) helped record a season-high minus 30 yards on sacks.

COWSETTE TIES SINGLE-GAME SACK TOTAL Sophomore Delbert Cowsette's two sacks marked the third time this season that a Maryland players had at least two sacks in a game. Junior Eric Barton had two sacks for minus 11 yards against Florida State and senior Eric Ogbogu recorded three sacks for minus 14 yards against Temple.

CRUZ IN SIXTH AMONG FRESHMAN RECEIVERS Redshirt freshman Moises Cruz enters today's game in sixth place among freshman all-time at Maryland with 21 catches. The all-time record is 58 catches by Frank Wycheck during the 1990 season.

BAKER TIES PERSONAL CAREER-HIGH Senior defensive back Henry Baker tied his personal career-high with ten total tackles against Virginia. His total against the Cavaliers ties his personal best mark which he set earlier this season against West Virginia. Included in that 10 total tackle performance was a career high eight solo stops.

RODGERS ON THE RECEIVING END OF THINGS Senior Buddy Rodgers has caught 17 passes for 176 yards in the last four games. He has caught one pass for more than 10 yards in each of the last four games and caught a 34-yard pass from Russell Edwards on a fake punt against West Virginia on October 11. He is the team's second leading receiver with 20 catches for 198 total yards.

RUSSELL IN THE ROLE OF RETURNING PUNTS Redshirt junior Keon Russell has returned six punts for 66 yards in the last two weeks (against Clemson and Virginia) to take over Terps punt return leadership. Russell returned five punts against Clemson for 55 yards and returned one punt against Virginia for 11 yards. His 55 punt return yards was a team single game high as was his 24-yard return against Clemson.

RUSSELL GAINS 51 ALL-PURPOSE YARDS AGAINST VIRGINIA Redshirt junior Keon Russell gained a career-high 51 all-purpose yards against Virginia. He returned one punt for 11 yards, one kickoff for 33 yards and caught his first career pass for a seven yard gain.

JORDAN IN THE LAST SIX GAME ON THE GROUND True freshman LaMont Jordan is averaging 4.2 yards per carry in his last six games. He has rushed for 377 total yards on 90 carries and has been held under 3.0 yards per rush only once in the last six games.

Johnny Holliday, in his 19th season as the Voice of the Terps, handles the play-by-play while Ken Broo joins the broadcast team this season as the color analyst.
