Red Defeats White, 17-0, in Spring Football Scrimmage

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Red team defensive back Ernest Grier intercepted the white team's Ken Mastrole on the third play from scrimmage and returned the ball 23 yards for a touchdown to lead his squad to a 17-0 victory in Maryland's annual spring football game this afternoon at Byrd Stadium.

First-string quarterback Brian Cummings completed a five-yard pass to running back Kenny Rogers with 1:21 remaining in the half to put the red team up 14-0. Cummings completed 10 of 15 passes and 90 yards and one touchdwon on the day while counterpart Ken Mastrole was 6 of 10 for 72 yards and one interception.

Kicker Brad Rhodes completed all scoring by connecting on a 46-yard field goal with 3:29 remaining in the game. Back-up punter Sean Starner posted a whopping 184 yards on four punts.

Leading rushers on the day were Brian Underwood, who gained 62 yards on 11 attempts, and Damone Boone, who compiled 58 yards on 9 days. Both Underwood and Boone played for the victorious red team.

Rogers also caught four passes for 37 yards to lead all Terps in reception yards. Peter Timmins' 24 yard reception out of the back field proved to be the longest play from scrimmage on the day.

New head coach Ron Vanderlinden will reward the red team Monday night with a steak dinner to honor the victory. The white team will act as servers and eat beans and franks next to its victorious teammates.
