Cummings Signs with CFL's Blue Bombers
COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- Maryland quarterback Brian Cummings (5-11, 195, Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep) announced today that he signed a free agent contract with the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week. Cummings, a three-year starter for the Terps, finished fifth all-time in Maryland history for yards (4,080), attempts (595), completions (344) and total offense (3,964).
Cummings posted personal bests in 1997 as well, completing 154 passes on 255 attempts and 10 touchdowns. His .604 completion percentage last year was the fourth-best single-season performance in school history. The Eastchester, N.Y. native also led the team with 1,621 total yards in 1997 and was voted MVP by his teammates.
The Blue Bombers are not the first professional team to show interest in Cummings. The two-sport star was also drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 19th round of the 1993 Major League Baseball Draft.
