Vanderlinden's Staff Loaded With Experience
A lightning bolt of enthusiasm struck College Park on Dec. 4
when Athletic Director Debbie Yow named Ron Vanderlinden as the
Terps' new head football coach.
Vanderlinden comes to College Park from Northwestern where he
served as the Wildcats' defensive coordinator since 1992. The
Wildcats were Big 10 Champions and Rose Bowl participants in
1996 and Big Ten Co-Champs and participants in the Citrus Bowl
in 1997.
Under his leadership, Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald was named
two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the year and All-American.
Northwestern finished first in the nation in scoring defense in
1995 (12.7) and third in turnover margin (+1.82). He also
coached the inside linebackers and the punt return unit which
finished first in the nation in 1992, fourth in 1993 and ninth
in 1995.
"Vandy" served as Colorado's defensive line coach for nine years
prior to joining the NU staff. He was also the recruiting
coordinator from 1985-86. While there he coached three
All-Americans and five first team All-Big 8 players. Colorado
won the 1990 national championship, three Big 8 titles and
played in six bowls.
He was the offensive line coach at Ball State from 1981-82.
After graduating from Albion College in 1978, he was a graduate
assistant at Michigan (1979-80) and Bowling Green (1978). He
was a two-sport star at Albion in football and baseball. He was
voted first-team all-conference his final two seasons on the
gridiron and started all four years.
Ron, 40, and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter Chelsea (9) and son
Reid (6).

Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks
Craig Johnson follows Vanderlinden from Northwestern to serve as
the Terps' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He
tutored the Wildcat quarterbacks for five seasons. Under
Johnson's instruction, NU's Steve Schur led the Big Ten in pass
efficiency in 1996. Johnson helped take the Wildcats to the
1997 Citrus Bowl and the 1996 Rose Bowl. He also led Army to
the 1985 Peach Bowl and Arkansas to the 1984 Liberty Bowl
He served as Virginia Military Institute's offensive coordinator
and quarterbacks coach for three years prior to moving on to
Northwestern. The VMI offense was ranked fifth nationally in
1990 and No. 1 in rushing for all I-AA schools in 1991. VMI's
quarterback Tony Scales finished as the second-leading rusher
among quarterbacks in Div. I-AA history.
Johnson coached Rutgers' running backs from 1986-88. He was a
part-time assistant at Army in 1985, coaching the likes of
All-America Doug Black. He broke into the coaching profession
as a graduate assistant at Wisconsin, his alma mater, in 1983.
He served Arkansas in the same fashion in 1984.
He was a three-year letterman and two-year starting quarterback
for Wyoming.
Johnson and his wife, Darlene, have two daughters, Shelby Marie
(6) and Sydney (4).

Interior Defensive Line
Rubin Carter joins the Maryland coaching staff after having
served as the defensive line coach at San Jose State University
the last two seasons. He was the defensive coordinator and
defensive line coach for the Bison from 1989 through 1993 prior
to San Jose State.
Carter played for the NFL's Denver Broncos from 1975 through
1986 and participated in Superbowls XII and XXI as a nose guard
and Superbowl XXII as an assistant defensive line coach. He
also coached Howard's defensive end Jose White, who signed with
the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.
Rubin, 42, has a son, Andre and daughter Diandra.

Outside Linebackers
Chris Cosh was the first coach to join Vanderlinden's staff and
one of two Illinois assistants lured to Maryland. The former
Washington D.C. Metro High School Player of the Year from Bishop
McNamara accompanies Sean Payton from the Illini staff.
Cosh served as Illinois' defensive coordinator/inside
linebackers coach last year and assistant head coach in 1995.
He began his tenure at Illinois as the inside linebackers coach
in 1992, molding Butkus Award winner Dana Howard in 1994.
He's a veteran of three bowls as well, coaching in the 1994
Liberty Bowl, 1992 Holiday Bowl and 1983 Peach Bowl.
Prior to his time in Champagne, he was an assistant coach at
Minnesota (1991) and Nevada-Las Vegas (1990), defensive
coordinator at Southeast Missouri State (1989) and
Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1985-88). He broke into the coaching
profession as a graduate assistant under Lou Tepper at Virginia
Tech in 1983.
Cosh also played for Tepper as a linebacker at Virginia Tech,
leading the team in tackles as a junior. A reoccurring neck
injury ended his playing career, but his transition into
coaching was a smooth one.
After he graduated from Virginia Tech, Cosh returned to Bishop
McNamara and led his alma mater to the Metro Conference title
and a 10-1 record.
Cosh, 36, and his wife, Mary, have two sons, J.J. and Billy.

Steve Greatwood

Offensive Line
Steve Greatwood comes to College Park after serving as the St.
Louis Rams' offensive line coach the last two seasons.
Greatwood was also a coach or player at the University of Oregon
for 19 years.
Greatwood became Oregon's offensive line coach in 1982 after
serving as graduate assistant two years prior. He coached the
Ducks to four bowl appearances, including the 1995 Rose Bowl.
Oregon also qualified for the 1992 Independence Bowl, the 1990
Freedom Bowl and the 1989 Independence Bowl.
He coached four players who played in the NFL, including
Minnesota's Gary Zimmerman. As a player, he lettered at guard
for Oregon from 1977 to 79 and participated in the Hula Bowl his
senior year.
Greatwood, 38, and his wife Sheri, have three daughters, Kallie,
13 and twins Tesa and Emmy, 8.

Defensive Backs
Doug Mallory, son of former Indiana head coach Bill Mallory, was
the defensive backfield and punters coach for the Hoosiers the
past three years. He inherits a Maryland squad that must
replace for senior starters.
He coached at Western Kentucky from 1990 through 1993 prior to
his time in Bloomington.
He served as the Hilltoppers' defensive coordinator his last two
seasons and as defensive backs coach all four years. He led
Western Kentucky's defense to an 18th-place finish in 1993.
Mallory broke into the coaching profession as a graduate
assistant at Indiana in 1988. He also spent one season as an
assistant coach with the U.S. Military Academy as assistant
coach in 1989.
As a player, he was an honorable mention All-American at strong
safety for Michingan. He played in four major bowls as a
Wolverine and was a member of Michingan's 1986 Big Ten
Co-Championship team. As a senior co-captain, he earned second
team All-Big Ten honors.
A 1988 graduate of Michigan with a degree in sports management
and communicaitons, Mallory and his wife, Lisa, have two
daughters, Emily and Allison.

Terry Malone

Terry Malone served as Boston College's offensive line coach in
1996 before joining the Maryland staff. Prior to his tenure
with the Eagles, he led a powerful Bowling Green offense for ten
years.
While at Bowling Green, the Falcons broke or tied 56 school or
MAC records, including most points scored in a season. He served
as Bowling Green's offensive coordinator, offensive tackles
coach, tight ends coach, guards coach and centers coach. He led
the Falcons to the 1992 Las Vegas Bowl Championship and the 1991
California Bowl Championship.
He entered the coaching profession in 1983 as a graduate
assistant at Arizona State. He worked with the Sun Devils'
offensive line for two years before returning to Holy Cross, his
alma mater, for one year (1985). His ten-year stint at Bowling
Green began in 1986.
Malone was a four-year starter at tight end for Holy Cross and
served as captain in 1982.
Malone, 36, and his wife, Ann, have three children, Kara (5),
Patrick (4) and Ryan (2).

Payton is the second former Illinois coach to become a member of
the Terrapin staff, joining Chris Cosh. Payton served as
quarterbacks coach last season at Illinois after a two-year
stint in the same role at Miami (Ohio). Miami handed
Vanderlinden's Wildcats their only Big Ten defeat in 1995.
He coached All-WAC quarterback Tim Gutierrez to a national
seventh-place finish in passing in 1993. Payton coached Heisman
Trophy runner-up Marshall Faulk at San Diego State in 1992. He
also coached quarterbacks in 1990 and receivers in 1991 while at
Indiana State.
Payton, 32, and his wife, Beth, are expecting their first child.
