Vanderlinden Names Three Assistants

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Head Football Coach Ron Vanderlinden today named Lou Tepper, Rubin Carter and Sean Payton as members of his coaching staff at the University of Maryland. Vanderlinden, who was named as the Terrapins' head coach on December 4, welcomes Tepper as the team's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Carter as its interior defensive line coach and Payton as its receivers or running backs coach. The final determination on Payton's responsibilities will be made when Vanderlinden completes the make-up of his staff.

"In selecting assistant coaches, I look first for a man whose own life is in order and who has a background of stability," said Vanderlinden. "It's important that each member of our staff share my goals for the direction of the Maryland football program. Equally important, each coach we bring in is a proven winner and a great football coach."

Tepper, 51, who spent the last five seasons as the head coach at the University of Illinois, reunites with Vanderlinden after coaching against him in the Big 10 the last five years. Vanderlinden and Tepper coached together at Colorado from 1983-87; Vanderlinden as the Buffaloes' defensive line coach and Tepper as their defensive coordinator. Tepper also served Colorado as its assistant head coach from 1986-87. He went to Illinois in 1989 as its defensive coordinator and was promoted to assistant head coach in 1990. He spent 17 of his 30 coaching seasons as a defensive coordinator.

Carter, 43, served as defensive line coach at San Jose State University the last two seasons. Prior to San Jose State, he coached at Howard University from 1989 through 1993. He was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the Bison. Carter played for the NFL's Denver Broncos from 1975 through 1986 and participated in Superbowls XII and XXI as a nose guard and Superbowl XXII as an assistant defensive line coach. His relationship with San Jose State Head Coach John Rolston dated back to 1975 when Rolston, then head coach and general manager of the Denver Broncos, selected Carter in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

Payton, 32, is the third former Illinois coach to become a member of the Terrapin staff, joining Tepper and Chris Cosh. Payton served as quarterbacks coach last season at Illinois after a two-year stint in the same role at Miami (Ohio). Miami handed Vanderlinden's Northwestern squad its only Big Ten defeat in 1995. Payton coached All-WAC quarterback Tim Gutierrez to a national seventh-place finish in passing in 1993. Payton coached Heisman trophy runner-up Marshall Faulk at San Diego State in 1992. He also coached quarterbacks in 1990 and receivers in 1991 while at Indiana State.
