Wolfpack Downs Terps, 34-8
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jose Laureno passed for two touchdowns in a 17-point third
quarter and Carlos King ran for two more scores as North
Carolina State won for the first time this season with a 34-8
Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland on Saturday (Oct. 5).
Laureno threw scoring passes of 22 yards to Jimmy Grissett and
44 yards to Torry Holt for the Wolfpack (1-3, 1-2 ACC), who
solved a Maryland team that entered the game ranked ninth
nationally in total defense.
Coach Mark Duffner described Saturday's loss his "most disappointing loss since I've been here. This was a
game I thought we should have won."
King opened the scoring with a one-yard run early in the second
quarter and went into the end zone from seven yards out midway
through the fourth quarter for a 34-7 lead.
Marc Primanti added field goals of 20 and 43 for the Wolfpack
and has made his last 15 attempts dating back to Oct. 7,
1995. His second kick increased the lead to 27-0 after three
quarters.
"We can't
really explain it," said quarterback Ken Mastrole, who started in place of
the injured Brian Cummings. "We've just got to get back to executing."
"Any
time you hear a thousand people booing you, that's self-explanatory how you
feel," safety Lamont Gore said. "But I kind of understand how they feel.
They pay their money, so they have the right."
Brian Underwood scored the only touchdown for Maryland (2-3,
0-2) with 10:48 left in the game, but the Wolfpack responded
two minutes later with the second touchdown by King.
The game might have changed on one play in
the first quarter. Laureano threw a backward lateral pass
to tight end Mark Thomas, who dropped it. Lineman Jamie Wu picked it up and
when he reached the State 40, he handed it
off to Chad Scott who ran for an apparent touchdown.
But the officials ruled the original fumble couldn't be advanced because it was a lateral pass.
"I don't think that got us down, but it
might have taken some out of the crowd," said linebacker Ratcliff Thomas,
who had nine tackles, one fumble recovery and one sack.
Duffner says a bowl bid is the farthest thing from his mind.
"We just need to win a football game right now."
