Virginia Grinds Out 21-3 Victory Over Terps

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--Defensive tackle Tony Dingle returned an interception for a touchdown and Tiki Barber ran for 123 yards and two scores as 22nd-ranked Virginia ground out a 21-3 victory over Maryland in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools.

Dingle, a sophomore, stepped in front of a screen pass by freshman Ken Mastrole and rumbled 10 yards into the end zone with 6:07 left in the second quarter to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead. Mastrole was playing in place of Brian Cummings, who separated his right shoulder in the first quarter on a hit from three Cavaliers defenders.

It was the 31st straight game that the Cavaliers (2-0) have intercepted a pass, an NCAA record. Maryland (2-1) committed three turnovers, all of which led to touchdowns.

An interception by Ronde Barber, Tiki's twin, at the Terrapins 19 set up a six-yard run by Tiki Barber with 2:31 left in the game, completing a march that was kept alive by an offsides penalty.

Dingle then recovered a fumble by Mastrole on the Terps' next possession and Tiki Barber capped the scoring with a 14-yard run with 1:35 left.

Joe O'Donnell kicked a 45-yard field goal for Maryland in the third quarter. He had missed from 31 and 42 yards in the first half.

Both Virginia quarterbacks struggled and the Cavaliers did not complete a pass in the first half. Tim Sherman finished 4-of-12 for 51 yards and was intercepted twice. Aaron Brooks was 1-of-6 for nine yards.

Mastrole was 9-of-15 for 66 yards with two interceptions.

George Welsh of Virginia became the first ACC coach to win 100 games. He also has 55 triumphs at Navy.

Virginia, which has won its last five games with Maryland, had four turnovers.
