SCORING DROUGHT ENDS: Joe O'Donnell's 35-yard field goal with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter was Maryland's first points against Clemson since 1992.
THE GOOD: Underwood ran for a team-high 80 yards in 14 attempts. Rogers was in only a handful of plays because of continuing problems with his quadriceps. He ran once for one yards.
FRUSTRATION SETTING IN: "We flat-out got our asses kicked," quarterback Brian Cummings said. "Sometimes we get a little hope, and then we don't do a thing while our defense stays on the field . . .I understand how some people feel. I never promote walking off the field - you always want to run - but I know how they feel. We've definitely underachieved this season.
ANYTHING BUT SECURE: Maryland entered the game focused on doing everything to protect Cummings. There was no run-and-shoot, no four-receiver sets and hardly any trick plays. Duffner opted to use tight ends and fullbacks as protection - Cummings was sacked eight times. He went 5-13 for 48 yards, and had an interception returned for a touchdown in his first game in two weeks. Maryland had 113 total yards and converted 3-of-15 third down chances.
GREENE REINJURES SHOULDER: Early in the third quarter, Clemson quarterback Nealon Greene reinjured his left shoulder after being knocked down and fallen on after an incomplete pass intended for Kenya Crooks. Greene originally hurt the shoulder against Georgia Tech. His injury is classified as a sprain. It is unclear if he will be available to start the Virginia game next Saturday. "I definitely want to play," said Greene. "It's up to the coaches. Hopefully I can get healthy and not take any more shots like that." Greene did not practice during the bye week because his shoulder was tender. Greene finished the game 5-of-10 passing for 47 yards and a touchdown.
ORANGE PANTS IN STYLE: For the first time since last year's 17-10 win over North Carolina, 366 days ago, the Tigers donned their famed Orange pants. Coach West said that the team had been asking to wear them all season, but he did not feel they had earned it until after the Homecoming upset of Georgia Tech. "I said 'if you're going to wear them, I had better see some difference,'" said West. "I definitely did see a difference today." Clemson is now 30-6 in orange pants, including 20-3 at home, 15-2 in games Tommy West has been associated with and 6-0 aginst Maryland. They are 17-1 in orange pants in the month of November.
WEST PLEASED WITH DEFENSE: West was impressed with his defense which held the Terps to 113 yards of total offense. The Tigers had eight sacks for -66 yards by seven different players, 15 tackles for losses, an interception and two forced fumbles. Trevor Pryce had two sacks for -25 yards, another tackle for a loss of five yards and was in the backfield on almost every play. "Today, Trevor looked like he can look like," said West. "Trevor certainly did his job today." "We were trying to send a message," said Pryce. "
