Terps and the NFL Draft
There have been 26 Terps drafted during the last 10 years. There have also been 63 players either drafted or signed as free agents over the last eight seasons.
Maryland had two players – WR Torrey Smith (Baltimore, second round) and Da’Rel Scott (NY Giants, seventh round) – selected in the 2011 NFL Draft and another – Travis Baltz (Indianapolis), Adrian Cannon (San Diego), Adrian Moten (Indianapolis), LaQuan Williams (Baltimore), Alex Wujciak (Cleveland) and Will Yeatman (New England) – six sign as free agents despite just 12 seniors on scholarship in 2010.
The Terrapins had five players (WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, CB Kevin Barnes, LB Moise Fokou, OL Jaimie Thomas, and TE Dan Gronkowski) selected in the 2009 NFL Draft which was the most since 2004 when Maryland also had five players chosen. The five selections were also the most for an ACC school in 2009.
The Terps have had at least two players selected in eight of the last 10 drafts.
There were 30 former Maryland players on NFL rosters (26 active; 4 on practice squads) at the end of the 2010 season which was the third-highest total among Atlantic Coast Conference teams, trailing just Miami and Florida State.
Darrius Heyward-Bey was drafted seventh overall by the Oakland Raiders in 2009, the second Terp taken in the Top 10 in a four-year span (Vernon Davis – sixth overall by San Francisco in 2006).
Josh Wilson was chosen in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft, becoming the highest drafted cornerback in school history. A Maryland cornerback has been selected in five of the last seven drafts (Nolan Carroll – 2010; Kevin Barnes – 2009; Josh Wilson – 2007; Gerrick McPhearson – 2006; Domonique Foxworth – 2005).
