Overtime belongs to Maryland. So does the NCAA championship. Kristi Toliver hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to cap a 13-point comeback, then the freshman made two free throws with 35 seconds left in overtime on Tuesday night to give the Terrapins their first NCAA women's basketball title.

Maryland took it slow, took it inside, and took all the fun out of the Tar Heels. The Terrapins - the only team to beat No. 1 North Carolina this season - one-upped their own upset Sunday night, beating the Tar Heels 81-70 in the NCAA women's national semifinal. Now Maryland will play for the first women's basketball title in school history.

Third-ranked Maryland heads to the Final Four for the first time since 1989. The Terps are the only No. 2 seed to advance to the national semifinals and face top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, April 2 in the first game of the night at 7 p.m.

Maryland got dragged into the first overtime of the NCAA tournament. Not that it cared: The Terrapins knew they were headed to the Final Four once it hit the extra session. Toliver set career highs with 28 points and six 3-pointers and Crystal Langhorne added 16 points and 10 rebounds, for the Terps, who are returning to the Final Four for the first time since 1989 and play Sunday against the winner of the Cleveland Regional final between North Carolina and Tennessee.

With the game on the line, Maryland coach Brenda Frese decided to get the ball inside to star post player Crystal Langhorne. She came through in the clutch. Langhorne capped a 30-point effort with two late inside baskets and St. John's went cold from the field as the second-seeded Terps held off No. 7 seed St. John's 81-74 Tuesday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Maryland head coach Brenda Frese is among four finalists named for the Naismith Award Women's Coach of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Frese, who is in her fourth season at the Terrapin helm, has guided the third-ranked and second-seeded Terps to its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1992.

Maryland earned its highest NCAA tournament seed in 14 years. For the Terrapins, it wasn't quite high enough. The Terps (28-4) expected a top spot, but were seeded second in the Albuquerque Regional and will meet No. 15 Sacred Heart (26-4) on Sunday at University Park, Pa.

The NCAA announced the 64-team championship bracket and the third-ranked Maryland women's basketball team earned a No. 2 seed in the Albuquerque regional, the highest seed for the Terps since 1992. Ashleigh Newman hit a long desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime while Marissa Coleman scored five straight points afterward to help sixth-ranked Maryland beat No. 1 North Carolina 98-95 on Thursday night, ending the Tar Heels' 30-game home winning streak.

When she hired Brenda Frese to coach the Maryland women's basketball team in April 2002, athletic director Debbie Yow figured it would be several years before the Terrapins could compete for the national championship. The Terrapins finished 10-18 in Frese's first season, further evidence that a major rebuilding effort was required to turn around a once-proud program that had not added to its eight Atlantic Coast Conference titles since 1989.
