Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
“First of all, I want to thank all of the middle schools and elementary schools. It really made a big difference today and we enjoyed the ‘I scream for ice cream’ challenge. It was a big boost and I thought we had tremendous energy coming out on the tip. You could tell we were excited and ready to play. I thought we set the tone early and we were aggressive early on. I loved seeing a lot of different looks defensively and I thought we were able to get some really easy scores in terms of the way we defended. It was a really good game for us to begin with and to build on.”
On rebounding and defense:
“I thought we really improved in that area. I thought there were quite a few rebounds that we could have gotten. I was really encouraged by our steals and I think we averaged about eight or nine steals last season so it was a good boost today.”
On the scoring balance:
“It was good to get a lot of the players involved. It is really how we have been in practice and when you see our different looks and match-ups, I think we are playing really well for so early on in the season.”
On the boost of the bench today:
“It was huge and what I liked was that every player who came off of the bench was ready to play. It did not take them two or three minutes to get into the action, which shows we were actively paying attention on the bench. I thought Tierney [Pfirman] and Kristen [Confroy] came in and were ready from the tip. We never had a drop-off and I thought we sustained the intensity today.”
On her sons’ elementary school being in attendance:
“We had numerous conversations this week that they were not allowed to leave their sets, so I am curious to talk about it when we get home, but they were excited to come with their classmates and I think they are getting a tour after so they are pumped.”
On Kiara Leslie:
“I thought she was spectacular today as well. The most exciting thing is that she does not even realize how talented she is yet. I thought she really grew in this game and I loved the fact that she was confident with the ball and you could really see her power and athleticism today. Again, she is just another great option to have.”
Sophomore Guard Lexie Brown
On the start of the game:
“I was excited to get the season started, as a point guard I feel like it is my responsibility to get the team going. If I come out aggressive, the rest of the game will lay itself out and the rest of the team will follow my lead and come out aggressive as well.”
Freshman Guard Kristin Confroy
On being the first player to come in off the bench:
“I was able to get the butterflies out early on in the exhibition games, I was really confident coming in today and excited to get the season ready to roll.”
On her transition to point guard:
“I think basketball is basketball, it doesn't really matter where you are on the floor, if you are willing to find your teammates and take on the role then it can be done. I was really excited to be able to take that role because I think I have had success so far here at Maryland and it helped me continue to play throughout the game even when I wasn’t at the point, it still is a source of confidence knowing you can still make your teammates successful no matter what."
Junior Forward Tierney Pfirman
On her thoughts of the game:
“My main goal was to go out and have fun. When I have fun everything else reveals itself, team work, everything. Going out there and getting my first offensive rebound, that was a pretty big motivator so I just figured since I got the first one then why not get 10 more.”
