COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 10th-ranked Maryland womens basketball team took the steam out of the Purdue Boilermakers, 88-64, Thursday night at XFINITY Center as the Terrapins wore them down with their depth and speed. Maryland (12-2, 3-0 B1G) was led by sophomore Brionna Jones, who scored 16 points with a career-high 17 rebounds.
Sophomore Shatori Walker-Kimbrough continued to have a hot hand, as she scored a team-high 18 points, including 14 in the second half. Redshirt senior Laurin Mincy added 16 points and sophomore Lexie Brown notched 10 points.
After a quick bucket by the Terps to open the game, then the Boilermakers (9-6, 2-2) went on an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead two minutes in.
A basket by Jones after a Terps timeout started Maryland on a 15-6 run to take a 17-14 lead with 11:23 to play in the first.
The Terrapins made 8 of 9 shots in the middle of the first period. A jumper by Chloe Pavlech started a 22-8 run for Maryland over the last nine minutes of the first half. She scored nine of Maryland’s points. The Terps led 45-26 at the break.
Purdue came out hot in the second half to cut the Terps’ lead to 11 with 10 minutes to play, but Walker-Kimbrough scored 10 of her 14 points to hold the Boilermakers at bay.
Maryland outrebounded Purdue, 49-28, including 23 offensive rebounds to seven for the Boilermakers.
The Terrapins lead the Big Ten and are sixth in the country in scoring with 84.4 points per game. The Terrapins are second in the country in field goal percentage (49.7), behind only UConn.
The Terps are 47-29 (.618) all-time against their 2014-15 Big Ten opponents. In the 13 years under head coach Brenda Frese, the Terps are 15-4 (.789) against their new conference opponents. Frese is 27-10 (.730) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time at Minnesota (2001-02) and at Ball State (1999-01).
Maryland is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today Division I Coaches poll and No. 12 in the latest Associated Press poll.
