Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
“I thought we came out ready to play. Defensively for us, we’ve got a lot improvement to do. I thought Shatori (Walker-Kimbrough) has been so consistent coming out in back to back games and leading this team with her energy and her intensity. She’s just setting the tone for us, we’ve just got to have more players continue to play at that pace and consistently be there as we get ready to play. Obviously it was a special was a special night for us having Laura Harper come back and us recognizing members of our 2006 national championship team. It’s awesome to be able to see it come full circle and have her now in coaching and come back here into XFINITY.”
On the team’s ball movement:
“I think we are a very unselfish team, sometimes to a fault. I thought we had some really good plays looking for one another. I think our ball movement against a size has got to improve. We understand big picture of what’s ahead and we have got to have better ball movement.”
On the team’s balance:
“I think it is important for us to be balanced at times. I challenged Shatori, she’s going to have to put up that kind of production until her teammates can come along. It’s kind of finding that blend right now. But anytime we can go down the stat sheet and have four or five players in double figures, it makes us that much more difficult to defend. So we have got to be able to have more balance.”
Junior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough:
On her level of intensity during the game:
"I like to lead by example, whether it's by making plays the team needs, whether it's defensively or offensively, or whether it's rebounding and getting the right pass or taking the right shot. It's whatever the team needs me to do."
On seeing the 2006 National Championship team being recognized during the game:
"It was an honor to see the recognition, and it's important knowing that it's not going to be easy. Coach reminded us that today. I feel like we have the blueprint to get to the Final Four and we just have to work that much harder to get past that and get a National Championship like the 2006 team did."
Freshman Kiah Gillespie
On her second half:
"Like Shatori said, I want to lead by example. I came out more confident in the second half. Coach said we had to play harder and do things better so I think it's important that we come out and show that we're trying to get better every time we step out on the floor."
On seeing the 2006 National Championship team being recognized during the game:
"It was very eye opening and very exciting to see them come back. They brought the first National Championship here, and it's important to realize the tradition that is brought here to Maryland. It's very important to me to uphold that standard and try to do what we have to do to win again."
