No. 5 Maryland 94, Southern 61
Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
“I thought it was a solid game for us. I like the fact that we were really unselfish sharing the basketball when you look at the 24 assists on 34 made baskets. Six players in double figures, I thought we moved the ball well.”
On play of Shatori Walker-Kimbrough:
“She is really clicking on all cylinders. Her preparation is tremendous. When you see from the tip she is ready to set the tone. We need to continue to follow her lead. She is prepared each and every night. The most rewarding thing is how consistent she has become for us.
On play against the zone defense:
“I thought we settled in especially with our big lineup. I thought they came out aggressive, looking to trap and throwing some things at us early. So I think once we settled in calmed down we were able to understand where we could break the defense.”
On play of Brionna Jones:
“Obviously she is a huge presence for us inside. I think our guard play did a phenomenal job getting her the ball tonight. She did a great job in terms of timing and being really aggressive. She keeps expanding on her game, which is exciting with her up-and-unders and her range. She just continues to keep working like everybody else and wanting to improve. You see that again tonight with double-double.”
On Kiah Gillespie, Brionna Jones and Malina Howard all starting together:
“It gives us a rebounding presence to be able to hit the glass extremely hard. Offensively, it allows us to be able to get the ball moving. So those are some things we’ve been able to see.”
On what the team needs to work on before their game next Sunday:
“We want to fine tune. We kind of know our areas where we need to improve. You kind of use this week off to focus on yourself. We try to make it short and intense with them juggling around finals. We just need to keep improving before we get home.”
On the team’s strength rebounding:
“That’s an area for us, especially when we see a lot of zone. If we’re not shooting the ball well, we have to be able to get extra possessions for ourselves on the offensive glass and the big lineup allows us to do that.”
Junior Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
On reaching 1000 points:
"It’s an honor, but I want to thank everyone that has helped me get to this point. Not just this year’s team, but also my freshman and sophomore year teams. I had a bunch of great players around me that helped me get to this milestone."
On th 1000-point celebration:
"I only knew when Chloe ran over to me and gave me a hug. I really wasn’t even thinking about it. I was actually thinking about what play we were going to run next. We were both asking each other, but then she ran over and hugged me."
Sophomore Guard Kristen Confroy
On Shatori Walker-Kimbrough reaching 1,000 points:
“It’s awesome to see her get rewarded. She works so hard every day. Whether it’s during practice or before and after, she’s always getting in extra shots. It’s definitely good to see as a teammate and it makes you want to work harder to help her reach her goals.”
On what has changed in the past couple games that has allowed her to score more points:
“I think it’s just a change in mindset. I’m looking to be more aggressive offensively. In the past I think I turned down some open looks and let down some teammates who were expecting me to shoot.
On if she prefers facing a man-to-man defense or a zone defense:
“I definitely prefer playing against a zone. That’s the case for most shooters. We typically do well against the zone.”
On Coach Frese and other players telling her to increase her offensive performance:
“I think that’s been the common phrase from everyone this season. I’m just trying to lock into that and look for my open shot. When I do take shots, it opens everything up for everyone else and makes the team better."
Redshirt Senior Guard Brene Moseley
On Shatori Walker-Kimbrough reaching 1,000 points:
“I think Shatori does what most of the team does which is work hard. All I have to do is get her the ball. She does all the work. It’s not that hard for me to do that and she makes everything easy.”
On the many different scorers on the Maryland team this season:
“We have so many weapons all over the board. I think the best thing about it is that everyone is so unselfish. We look to get the ball to whoever has it going that night. I think we do a great job of that as a team.”
On Kristen Confroy making shots:
“It means to get her the ball. That’s all I can do and it just opens everything up."
