#5 Terrapins Beat #19 Huskers to Win 15th Straight

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  Lexie Brown scored 14 points to help No. 5 Maryland (21-2, 12-0 B1G) extend its winning streak to 15 games with a 59-47 victory over No. 19 Nebraska (17-6, 7-5) Sunday at XFINITY Center.

Brionna Jones had 12 points and 9 rebounds for the Terrapins, who are riding their longest winning streak since going 16-0 to start the 2011 season. Malina Howard also finished with 12 points for Maryland.

After a back-and-forth first half, a jumper by Brown in the closing seconds provided a 29-24 lead for the Terps at the break.

The Terrapins got off to a quick start in the second half. A pair of free throws by Jones a layup by Howard provided a 36-25 cushion with 17:58 remaining, forcing Iowa to call timeout.

A layup by Jones provided the Terps with their first double-digit lead, 41-31, with 14:07 left. Nebraska struggled to make shots and was just 10 of 31 (32.3 percent) from the field in the second half.

This allowed Maryland to maintain the lead and five straight points by Brown gave the Terps a 48-37 lead with 5:53 remaining. The Cornhuskers could not cut into the margin and Maryland continued to pull away.

Nebraska did not attempt a free throw until 3:26 left in the game when Hailie Sample pulled the Cornhuskers to 54-40.

Tear'a Laudermill scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half for Nebraska. The Terrapins also won the first matchup, 75-47, on Jan. 3.

At 12-0 in Big Ten play, the Terps are off to their best start in conference play in school history.

The Terps are 56-29 (.659) all-time against their 2014-15 Big Ten opponents. Maryland has won 21 straight games against Big Ten teams, dating back to 2007. In the 13 years under Brenda Frese, the Terps are 24-4 (.857) against their new conference opponents. Frese is 36-10 (.783) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time at Minnesota (2001-02) and at Ball State (1999-01).

The Maryland-based organization, There Goes My Hero, was on-hand to swab fans that wanted to join the National Marrow Donor Program. Maryland welcomed children from Camp Sunrise, a week-long summer camp for patients who have been diagnosed or who have dealt with cancer, as well as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and The Zachary Hebda Foundation as part of the Team Tyler events.

The Terrapins honored former head coach Chris Weller with a banner unveiling at halftime of Sunday’s game. In her 27 seasons with the Terps, Weller guided Maryland to three Final Fours, eight Elite Eights, 10 Sweet Sixteen appearances and eight ACC Championships to include a win in the first ever women's basketball ACC Tournament Championship in 1978.

Next, the Terrapins have a quick turnaround and will host No. 21 Rutgers (18-5, 9-3) Tuesday for a 9 p.m. game at XFINITY Center. The Terps-Scarlet Knights game will be shown around the world on the Big Ten Network, BTN2Go.com and the BTN2Go app.
