Trio of Young Maryland Linemen Impress in Spring

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland football team closed out the first stage of spring workouts Wednesday on a high note as it transitioned into spring break.

Head coach Randy Edsall was pleased with the team’s progression through the first five practices and remarked upon the positives of a break during the spring season.

“For the most part, we’ve installed everything this spring offensively and defensively through the first five practices,” Edsall said. “When we come back from spring break, we will just have to review and refine and get better at the stuff we have in place. This will be our bread and butter and this is what we have to master.

Among the promising young Terrapins in spring workouts are a trio of offensive linemen who redshirted their freshman season: Derwin Gray, Brendan Moore and Damian Prince.

Gray and Prince, both highly touted local products, mentioned the benefits of serving a redshirt season in 2014.

“When I first got here, I didn’t think redshirting was for me, but looking back I think it was the best thing that ever happened to me because I had the opportunity to learn the system and develop,” Gray said.

“Last year was definitely a blessing,” Prince said. “I feel like redshirting definitely helped me a lot because you can’t just rush into things as an offensive lineman. I had the time to work on my technique and get acclimated to classes and things like that.”

Moore made the most of his first five spring workouts of 2015, placing an increased emphasis on technique and body positioning.

“The spring workouts have been a great process,” Moore said. “All the spring is about is really focusing on technique and Coach [Studrawa] is an amazing technician. All we have to do is work on our technique and the rest of the pieces will fall into place.”

The football team has the next week off before returning to spring workouts on Monday, March 23.
