Six Terps Named to IWLCA All-Regional Team

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six members of the Maryland women’s lacrosse team were selected to the IWLCA All-South Region teams, as announced Monday.
Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Brooke Griffin, Alice Mercer and Megan Whittle were named the first team while Zoe Stukenberg earned second team honors. All six Terps were named to the All-Big Ten team last month.
Cummings, a 2015 Tewaaraton finalist and the reigning Tewaaraton winner, leads the Terps with 30 assists, 86 points, 40 ground balls, 130 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers. Cummings was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and is a two-time IWLCA First Team All-American.
Douty was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after leading the sixth-ranked defense in the country this season. The senior Fair Haven, N.J., native has 25 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers so far this season. Douty was named an IWLCA First Team All-American in 2014.
Griffin has 40 goals and 19 assists on the season and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after leading Maryland’s sixth-ranked offense. A team captain alongside Douty and Kelly McPartland, Griffin earned IWLCA First Team All-American honors last season.
After earning all-region second team honors in her first two seasons, Mercer picked up first team accolades for playing a key role in Maryland’s defense. Mercer has 16 ground balls, 12 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers this season.
Whittle has played an immediate role on the Terps’ offense. The freshman attacker leads Maryland with 63 goals.
Stukenberg has had a solid sophomore campaign after earning ACC Freshman of the Year accolades. The midfielder has posted 36 goals, 18 assists, 16 ground balls and 14 draw controls in 2015.
The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2015. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Monday, May 18. The No. 1 seeded Terps host eighth seed Northwestern Sunday in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Opening draw is scheduled for noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
