#1 Terps Face Syracuse in NCAA Semifinals Friday

The top-seeded Maryland women’s lacrosse team (19-1) takes on No. 4 seed Syracuse (16-7) in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament Friday. Opening draw is schedule for 7:30 p.m. at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

  • The No. 1-ranked Terps are averaging 14.55 goals per game while limiting opponents to 7.20 goals per game. The Terrapins have the fifth-ranked scoring defense in the country and the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the NCAA.
  • Through two NCAA games this season, the Terps are averaging 18 goals per game while limiting opponents to just 6.50 goals per game.
  • Junior Taylor Cummings leads the Terrapins with 31 assists, 89 points, 40 ground balls, 131 draw controls and 34 caused turnovers. Freshman Megan Whittle leads Maryland with 64 goals.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick has started all 20 games and holds a 6.91 goals-against average and .464 save percentage.

  • Syracuse defeated Penn and Loyola in the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the team's fourth straight Final Four. The Orange defeated Duke and North Carolina - both Final Four teams - to take home the ACC Tournament title last month.
  • The Orange are led offensively by Halle Majorana (53G, 36A) and Tewaaraton finalist Kayla Treanor (57G, 29A). Kailah Kempney has 186 draw controls on the season.
  • Kelsey Richardson has started all 23 games in goal and holds a 9.98 goals-against average and a .433 save percentage.

  • Maryland is 17-1 all-time against Syracuse. The Terps and Orange battle each other for the fifth time in two seasons Friday.
  • The teams faced each other three times in 2014, including in the ACC Championship and the NCAA Championship finals.
  • Maryland has won the last six meetings between the programs. Syracuse’s only win against the Terps came on March 10, 2012, in College Park.

  • Led by seniors Kristen Lamon,Brooke GriffinKelly McPartland and Erin Collins, the top-seeded Maryland women’s lacrosse team (19-1) used an 11-goal second half to take down No. 8 seed Northwestern, 17-5, in the NCAA quarterfinals Sunday.
  • Lamon (4G, 2A), Griffin (4G), McPartland (2G, 3A) and Collins (3G, 1A) led the Terrapin offense as Maryland advanced to its seventh-straight NCAA Championship weekend.
  • The Terps led in shots, 24-19, and finished with 21 shots on goal. Maryland held an 11-6 ground ball advantage. The Terps went 5-of-6 on free-position shots while holding Northwestern to no 8-meter shots.

  • The Terps lead the nation with 31 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (59), championship game appearances (18) and NCAA titles (11).
  • Maryland is making its 26th consecutive appearance in the championship (1990-2015).

FIVE TERPS NAMED IWLCA ALL-AMERICANS

  • Five Maryland women’s lacrosse players were named IWLCA All-Americans Monday.
  • Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty and Brooke Griffin earned spots on the first team while Alice Mercer was named to the second team and Megan Whittle earned third team honors.
  • The five Terrapins are the most of any program honored by the IWLCA and Maryland has the most players on the first team.
  • Cummings is a three-time first team All-American while Douty and Griffin earned the honor for the second straight season. Mercer was a third team All-American in 2014.

  • Junior midfielder Taylor Cummingswas named one of five finalists for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday.
  • Cummings won the Tewaaraton trophy last season, becoming the youngest female winner in the award’s history.
  • A member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, Cummings’ per game averages for points, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers top the Big Ten, and she ranks fifth in the nation in points and draw controls.
  • Cummings would be the Terps’ sixth Tewaaraton Award winner, and Maryland’s second two-time winner.

  • Brooke Griffin, Taylor Cummings and Megan Douty earned 2015 Big Ten Conference individual honors, as voted on by the league’s six coaches and announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
  • Griffin was named the conference’s Attack Player of the Year and has 39 goals and 18 assists on the season. The redshirt senior attacker is the leader of the sixth-ranked scoring offense as the Terps are averaging 14.42 goals per game.
  • Cummings was named Midfielder of the Year after leading the Terps in nearly every statistical category. Cummings was named both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week by the conference during the regular season.
  • Douty was named the Defensive Player of the Year after leading the sixth-ranked scoring defense. The senior defender has caused 20 turnovers and picked up 25 ground balls this season.
