Maryland Falls 2-1 at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas. – Senior Sarah Fichtner tallied in the first half, but the Maryland women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (3-2-0) outshot the Horned Frogs in the opening stanza and held a lead at halftime. The home team fought back in the second half and an 87th minute winner gave TCU the victory.
“Credit to TCU for bringing a good mentality to the game,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “This wasn’t the greatest performance by our group tonight. We’ll need to bring a higher level of commitment for Sunday’s match against SMU.”
In their home opener, the Horned Frogs started fast before Fichtner notched the opening shot of the game that missed to the left of the goal.
The senior then grabbed the opening goal of the game off a Shannon Collins corner in the 17th minute. Junior Lisa Bianchini also received an assist on the play, her first as a Terrapin.
Maryland continued to pressure in the first half when Cassie Phillips had a shot blocked in the 29th minute. The Terrapins ended the half with a 1-0 advantage.
Collins forced a save in the 47th minute before TCU leveled the match. Michelle Prokof took a pass from Kayla Hill and finished from 10 yards out.
Sophomore Alex Anthony was able to force a couple of saves from TCU keeper Shannon Coffer, but the Terps were unable to find the winning goal. Faith Carter found the decider for TCU in the 87th minute, heading past Rachelle Beanlands.
For her part, Beanlands notched five saves on the night, continuing her climb up the Maryland record books. Her 64th start tied for third in program history.
Maryland returns to action Sunday against SMU. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
