No. 8/8 Maryland 89, Nebraska 50
Head Coach Brenda Frese
On tonight's game:
“Like I told our team, I was really excited by our response coming off our last game. We were really ready to go from the first tip. I thought it showed great character. When you look across the board in terms of how we defended, rebounded and shared the basketball we were able to make many easy play and get up in down in transition. I felt it was one of our most complete games. We had a lot of fun you could see that. We got better tonight and we were fresh and ready to play.”
On points in the paint:
“Obviously, Malina [Howard] and Brionna [Jones] set the tone from the tip. That was one of the best games I have ever seen from Malina. Just the confidence that she is playing with and opening things up makes it easier for her teammates. Just the dominance when we can have that inside outside approach and shooting the basketball from the perimeter makes it really hard to guard us.”
On ball security:
“I thought that we were making the easy play and the right play. We didn't have any unforced turnovers. We were patient to let the game come to ourselves and I thought we did a tremendous job. Even with the double teams. We did a great job relocating and the communication was really good.”
On having two prominent centers:
“It is huge. They cannot double off anyone. Who do you pick when you have all five players on the floor that can score? When you have all five players on the floor that have the ability to score makes us a really dangerous team.”
Senior Center Malina Howard
On playing after last game:
“We were really eager to play. We came out with a chip on our shoulder and just wanted to get back out on the court and play against competition. We wanted to show what Maryland basketball really is and get back to who we are. My teammates gave me a lot of confidence. They told me to keep going at them and keep shooting the ball.”
Senior Guard Brene Moseley
On controlling the game:
“I think in and out was working for us. We got the ball in and got it back out and we were knocking down all our jumpers. It was easy we were just passing the ball and knocking them down. Having fresh legs was great for our transition. Our energy came from that. We were able to push the ball and get a lot of layups. We had a good tempo the whole game.”
Nebraska Head Coach Connie Yori
Opening Statement:
“I think Maryland is very underrated in terms of their execution. They are deep and very well -coached. They do a great job of taking advantage of errors that you make and we are a very young team that makes a lot of errors, so there is a lot of to take advantage of there. But, you look at what they do on both ends and I just think that they play with a lot of detail. They play the way the game is supposed to be played. They play the game very hard, very smart, they play together and their execution for as young as they are in a lot of ways is very impressive by how well they are playing right now.”
On Maryland’s size in the frontcourt:
“Well, we doubled them. They did a nice job of playing out of double teams. Then we went to some single. So we doubled off their guards a little bit, then we doubled off the post. They are so used to seeing double teams that they do a good job of making that third pass out of the double team. They did a good job of throwing the ball down low and getting open shots.”
On what was most challenging for the team tonight:
“Their ball screen offense was a concern coming in and they did a good job of executing their ball screen offense.”
On Jessica Shepard’s performance:
“She was playing against a lot of size and quickness. She was playing against kids the same size that she is, but they also have some good speed and have some good feet. So that, as a freshman, she hasn’t seen that a whole lot. We’ve been able to post her up against smaller lineups and she’s been able to out quick people with her quickness, but tonight she didn’t have an advantage there.”
On the team’s mentality after the game:
“Well we’ve got to play a lot better, but it starts with our practices. We’ve been an inconsistent practicing team this year and kind of the hallmark of our program over the years is we’ve been a great practicing team and a great preparation team, and we’re not there yet.”
