Whittle Scores Five as #1 Terps Beat #11 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Taking advantage of a strong start, the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team (13-0) defeated No. 11 Princeton (8-3), 15-6, Wednesday evening.
The Terps outscored the Tigers 10-1 in the first half. Sophomore attacker Megan Whittle scored five goals in the game while junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg tallied a hat trick. Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings and freshman attacker Caroline Steele each scored two goals while senior midfielder Bryn Boucher, sophomore attacker Kacie Longo and freshman midfielder Jen Giles each notched one goal.
Whittle started the scoring just 44 seconds into the game and added a second goal at 24:42. Boucher passed on a free-position opportunity, and Stukenberg found the back of the net at 23:44. Steele added a goal with a low shot at 19:34 and Cummings scored on a free-position shot at 11:01. Giles tallied a goal at 8:50 to push the Maryland lead to 6-0.
After Amanda Leavell scored for Princeton at 7:46, the Terps ended the half on a 4-0 run. Cummings cut inside the arc and scored at 7:20, and Stukenberg scored less than a minute later. Whittle completed her hat trick at 4:25, and Stukenberg scored her 100th career goal with 41 seconds left in the half.
Boucher won the first draw control of the second half and scored just 11 seconds in. Whittle added her fourth goal at 26:28. Leavell scored her second of the game for Princeton at 24:53. Steele and Whittle each added goals as the Terps took a 14-2 lead.
The Tigers scored three straight to pull within nine, 14-5. Longo dodged and scored at 4:18 to increase the lead to 15-5. Princeton added one more goal with 38 seconds remaining as Maryland won, 15-6.
The Terps held a 16-7 advantage in draw controls, led by eight from Cummings. Maryland also held a 21-13 advantage in ground balls and a 36-9 lead in shots.
The Terps return home to face No. 8 Ohio State Saturday at noon. Maryland’s six seniors will be honored before the game, which will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
