COLLEGE PARK, Md - A pair of Maryland women's lacrosse players, Megan Whittle and Megan Taylor garnered weekly national and conference honors on Tuesday.
Both Whittle and Taylor earned Big Ten honors, as Whittle was named the Co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while Taylor was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Whittle was also named the Brine/US Lacrosse National Player of the Week for her efforts this past week.
This past week, Whittle both tied and passed Maryland great Jen Adams for the all-time goal lead at Maryland. Against Princeton, Whittle tied Adams with a second half goal that started a 7-2 game-ending run for the Terps to pull out a comeback victory. Against Ohio State, Whittle broke the record early in the contest on a free position attempt, while later adding two more goals.
The senior tied for the team lead in points (four) in the win over Princeton and she tallied a hat trick in both the Princeton and Ohio State games. She also added an assist, three groundballs and a caused turnover to her weekly stat line.
This marks Whittle's fourth Big Ten honor of the season and second national honor, as she was also named the IWLCA National Player of the Week on 3/28.
Taylor had an extremely strong week in the cage, making 18 saves while only allowing 15 goals in the two wins. She owned a 7.85 goals-against-average and stopped 54.5 percent of the shots on goal. Taylor notched her second-highest save total of the season with 12 against Princeton, while also posting a pair of groundballs. The junior goalie has been key on a Maryland defense that has held its opponents to 10 goals or less in eight of the last nine games, all wins.
This is the second week in a row and third time this season that Taylor has been recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
