Nov. 11, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Maryland women's basketball team lost its final exhibition contest of the year against its alumni team by a score of 84-76. The young Terrapins led the veteran team, including WNBA stars Vicky Bullett, Katrina Colleton, and Jessie Hicks, for most of the game, but eventually lost the lead during the last 10 minutes, resulting in the hard-fought loss.
In the first half, the alumni team jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Terps went on a 16-7 run, which spanned six minutes. Maryland kept its lead over the alumni through the half, paced by an exceptional outing by Terrapin junior guard March? Strickland (Kingston, Mass.), who had 19 first-half points. Strickland was on fire, going 6-10 in 16 minutes of play in the opening half, including a 3-6 performance from beyond the arc. Junior transfer Jamecca Harrell (Oxon Hill, Md.) also had nine points off the bench for the Terrapins in the first half. When the teams headed to the lockerroom, the current Terps held a 45-37 advantage over the Maryland alums.
Maryland held its lead for the opening 11 minutes of the second half, until the 9:02 minute mark when WNBA star Vicky Bullett tied it up on a jumper in the lane. Junior forward Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) fought to keep the Terps in the game, launching a 14-point second half effort, but to no avail as the alums held on for the win.
Current WNBA players Vicky Bullett and Katrina Colleton paced the alumni team, who had five players in double figures. Both Bullett and Colleton finished with 17 points. Bullett also pulled down 15 rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Strickland led three Terps in double figures, finishing the game with 26 points. Warley had a double-double for the Terps, tallying 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Maryland opens its regular season at Howard on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The Terps then travel to Loyola on Nov. 22 before opening their home schedule with the Terrapin Classic on Nov. 25-26. Other teams featured in the Classic will be Wagner, Maryland's first round opponent, Long Beach State, and Delaware.
