Nov. 4, 2000
College Park, Md.- - The Maryland women's basketball team opened its exhibition season with a 78-53 win over Eos Malbas Saturday night at Cole Field House. The Terps had four players in double figures, with Deedee Warley (Fort Washington, Md.) leading with 18 points.
Maryland started of sluggishly, playing catch-up most of the first half to the Swedish club team. Finally, with 4:11 remaining in the half, freshman Crystal Washington (Clinton, Md.) converted the three-point play to make it a 19-18 Maryland advantage. The Terrapins kept the lead and would take a 29-25 edge into the half.
The second half was all Maryland. The Terps' defense turned it on, causing 47 turnovers for the game and leading to 42 points off turnovers. "We want to be a good defensive team," said Maryland head coach Chris Weller, "We have a couple of line-ups that will be very quick defensively, and should really help us this year." Good defense led to offense, as the Terps pulled away for the 25-point victory.
Warley lead Maryland with 18 points, followed up by freshman Sarah Jenkins (Bowie, Md.) with 15 in her first outing with the Terps. Junior guard March? Strickland (Kingston, Mass.) pitched in a solid 12-point effort, with classmate Rosita Melbourne (Washington, D.C.) chipping in 13 off the bench. Of the 24 Maryland steals, lightening-quick guard Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.) led the team with six.
The Eos Malbas team was paced by Anette Mollerstrom, who had 18 points. Anette Percy contributed 12 points, while guard Tine Friel grabbed 11 rebounds and dished six assists.
Maryland's next action is against familiar faces, as former Terrapin alum come back to College Park for an alumni game on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. Several current and former WNBA and ABL players including Vicky Bullett (Washington Mystics), Katrina Colleton (Miami-Sol), Sonia Chase (Charlotte Sting), Kelley Gibson (Houston Comets), Jessie Hicks (Orlando Miracle), and Deanna Tate (New England Blizzard, Chicago Condors) will be in attendance. Eos Malbas has tomorrow night off before facing Georgetown on Monday.
