Dr. Sue Sherburne serves as the Executive Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Maryland. A senior member of the Athletic Directorโs Executive Leadership Team, Sherburne provides strategic leadership for areas central to the student-athlete experience, including academic success, health and wellness, student-athlete development, inclusive excellence,and overall well-being.
In her role, Sherburne oversees the Gossett Student-Athlete Center, student-athlete development and inclusive excellence initiatives, and sports medicine and performance services. She also serves as the departmentโs primary liaison to the Universityโs Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct and the Office of Student Conduct.
Aย respected leader within the Big Ten Conference, Sherburne represents Maryland on conference governance committees, including the Big Ten Joint Group and the Big Ten Budget and Review Committee. Since joining Maryland Athletics in October 2014, Sherburne has provided continuity and stability across the department while leading complex initiatives that strengthen the student-athlete experience. She has played a key role in advancing philanthropic support for academic and development priorities, including the Gossett Student-Athlete Center and the Kubasik First Impact Program.
Sherburne also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the University of Marylandโs Robert H. Smith School of Business, where she teaches BMGT383: The Business of Sport, the signature course in the programโs experiential learning curriculum.ย
Prior to joining the Terrapins, Sherburne was an adjunct faculty member in the Biobehavioral Health Department at Penn State University and an Associate Director at the Morgan Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. She also served as an academic counselor for the menโs and womenโs basketball programs, founded and directed the Athletic Directorโs Leadership Institute, and directed the three-time national championship Penn State Lionettes Dance Team.
Aย graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Sherburne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She went on to earn a Master of Science degree from Penn State University in Health Education with an emphasis in Community Health, and completed her Ph.D. in Interpersonal Communication. Her doctoral research focused on communication, interpersonal competence, and relational development among college athletes.
Aย native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sherburne and her husband, Mark, both serve as members of Maryland Athleticsโ executive leadership team. Mark is the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration.
