Sam Contorno joined the Maryland staff as the Coordinator of Sports Science in March of 2022. She arrived in College Park after spending five years at Stanford University. 

Contorno served as Stanford's Assistant Sports Performance Coach in 2021. She was also the Sports Performance Coach for Men’s Volleyball, and the 2018-19 National Champion Women’s Lightweight Rowing.

Contorno began her time with the Cardinal as an intern in 2017, before becoming a part-time Sports Performance Coach in 2018. As a part-time assistant, Contorno designed and implemented the training programs for Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Lightweight Rowing. As an intern, Contorno assisted with Men’s Volleyball, Wrestling, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Field Hockey, and Women’s Crew.

Prior to Stanford, Contorno was an Athletic Performance Intern for UCLA.

Contorno was born and raised in Bethel, Connecticut, and graduated with a BS in Molecular Integrative Neuroscience and a minor in Health & Wellness Studies from Binghamton University in 2012, and a MS in Human Nutrition from University of Bridgeport in 2018.

Contorno is CSCS, USAW-L1, CPR, AED, and First Aid certified.
