Biography

The Breakdown: A forward who has played through the middle and out wide for the Terps in his first three seasons, GielenĀ is a tremendous athletes who excels in the air. A local product who starred at DeMatha Catholic, Gielen was a standout on the soccer field and basketball court and could've played both sports at the college level.Ā 

As a Senior (2021): Appeared in 17 matches and started six in his final season....scored three goals and added an assist...scored goals vs UMBC (8/29), vs High Point (9/20) and vs. Northwestern (10/8)...recorded his lone assist of the season at Delaware (10/12)...played 743 minutes and recorded 30 total shots, with 18 coming on goal...Academic All-Big Ten selection.Ā 

As a Junior (2020):Ā Played in 10 matches and started five...scored one goal and added an assist...played 587 minutes...notched 11 shots including four on goal...started the opener and played 51 minutes against Penn State (2/19)...appeared off the bench against Ohio State (2/27), Wisconsin (3/7), at Michigan (3/11), Michigan State (3/19)...notched an assist in 93 minutes against Penn State (3/31)...scored the equalizing goal in the Big Ten quarterfinals against Rutgers (4/10)...started and played 90 minutes in the Big Ten semifinal at Indiana (4/14)...started and played 67 minutes in the NCAA Tournament second round against Missouri State....Academic All-Big Ten selection.

As a Sophomore (2019): Played 20 matches and started 14 of them...scored four goals and notched an assist in 1,384 minutes...found his stride late in the season, scoring three of his goals in the final six matches...Academic All-Big Ten selection...scored his first goal of the season and played 71 minutes at Michigan State (10/11)...notched an assist in 71 minutes against Indiana (10/18)...tallied the winning goal at Ohio State and played all 90 minutes (10/25)...scored a goal and played 92 minutes at Penn State (10/29)...scored the winning goal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Iona (11/21).

As a Freshman (2018): Played 18 games and started two..scored a goal and notched an assist...played 633 minutes and notched 15 shots...made his Maryland debut against Washington (8/24), playing 60 minutes...played 56 minutes against Stanford (8/31)...notched four shots in 59 minutes against Virginia (9/3)...made his first career start and played 81 minutes against UCLA (9/8)...started and played 59 minute against West Virginia (9/10)...made appearances off the bench against Wisconsin (9/21) and at Rutgers (9/26)...scored his first career goal, a game-winner at Coastal Carolina (9/30)...notched an assist against Ohio State (10/19)...played 18 minutes in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 at Duke (11/24).Ā 

Before Maryland: Starred at DeMatha Catholic High School for coach Andrew Quinn…scored 52 goals and notched 22 assists over his four seasons…three-time Washington Post All-Metro selection…United Soccer Coaches-Adidas High School All-American…2017 Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year…2017 WCAC Player of the Year…High School All-American…also played basketball at DeMatha…played club soccer for Baltimore Celtic…coached by Barry Stitz and Brandon Quaranta…helped Celtic win the U-17 USYS National Championship…captured the Golden Ball and was the leading scorer at the tournament…scored 59 goals in 42 games for Celtic…helped Celtic win two Maryland State Championships…was included in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd in November of 2014…Banneker/Key Scholarship recipient.
