Biography

The Breakdown: Johnston, brother of Canadian National Teamer Alistair Johnston, emerged as one of the best midfielders in the nation as a senior. Johnston is known for his composed demeanor and calm play in the center of the park and he was deployed mainly as a box-to-box No. 8 in central midfield, but is also comfortable playing at the No. 6 and the No. 10. Johnston was also a winger at points throughout his freshman campaign and Sasho Cirovski has said he would feel comfortable with him at any position on the field. The Canadian, who played at the same youth club as former Maryland star and Canadian men's national team player Dayne St. Clair, was Maryland’s main PK taker in 2022. A four-year starter, Johnston was a two-time team captain.
