  • Title
    Assistant Coach

Cole Matthews joined the Maryland Wrestling program as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach ahead of the 2024–25 season and was promoted to Assistant Coach prior to the 2025–26 season.

In his fist season with the Terps, Maryland had its best season in the nation’s most competitive conference. The team recorded its highest point total and most placers ever at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships, the Terps posted their best finish and most points since 2014. Jaxon Smith earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish at 184 lbs., becoming the first Terp to do so since 2019. Maryland also qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in 2025 — the program's most qualifiers since 2012.

Matthews came to Maryland after an outstanding six-year career at Pittsburgh, where he established himself as one of the top 141-pounders in the country.

He won over 100 career matches, qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of his final five seasons, and achieved All-American status in 2022 with a fifth-place finish. Matthews also captured two ACC Championships (2022 & 2023) and won the USA U23 Freestyle World Team Trials in 2022.

A native of Greenville, PA, Matthews was a two-time Pennsylvania state champion at Reynolds High School.
