Brian Rowland returned to Maryland as an assistant coach in March 2024. He was previously on staff in College Park for eight seasons from 2010-2017.
In 2025, Rowland helped lead one of the best teams in the nation to an undefeated regular season that saw the Terps finish ranked No. 1 in the final regular season United Soccer Coaches Poll. Maryland won the Big Ten Regular Season Championship finishing with an 8-0-2 record in Big Ten play in 2025. The Terps only trailed for a total of 78 seconds throughout their entire undefeated regular season. Maryland led the nation in total assists with 60 while also finishing fifth in the nation in scoring offense with 2.37 goals per match. Defender Lasse Kelp was named First Team All-American and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist while also wining Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Laurin Mack was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year as the Terps also had six student-athletes named to the All-Big Ten First Team.
In 2024, Rowland helped lead Maryland to a return to the NCAA Tournament after not qualifying the year before. Maryland finished the season with a 9-6-5. The Terrapins were ranked in the top 25 for the majority if the season, and ranked as high as second during the season. The Terps went on a 12-game unbeaten run, with a record of 8-0-4 during the span. The streak was the longest such streak since the 2017 season, where the Terps started the season going unbeaten in their first 13 games. Senior center-back William Kulvik earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, the first Maryland player since Alex Crognale in 2016 to receive the award.
Prior to spending the 2023 season with UMBC, Rowland was the head coach at Temple University for five seasons (2018-2022). Rowland led the Owls to notable wins over No. 2 SMU, Louisville, UConn and Tulsa during his tenure and helped the Ows achieve a No. 3 seed in the 2021 American Athletic Conference Tournament, the highest postseason seed in program history as a member of that league.
The former UMBC goalkeeper holds the program's single-season (11, 2002) and career shutouts record (25). He earned First Team All-Northeast Conference honors in his senior season of 2002.
Following Rowland's career at UMBC, he played professionally with the Toronto Lynx of the USL (2003-04), the Baltimore Blast and Milwaukee Wave of the MISL (2003-07) and finally with Crystal Palace USA of the USL from 2007 to 2009. Prior to landing at UMBC, Rowland competed on the Canadian Youth National U-20 team and trialed at Manchester United and Fulham.
Rowland is a native of Toronto, Ontario and earned his bachelor's degree in economics from UMBC in 2003. Rowland holds a USSF A License (2012) and is involved with US Soccer as a scout for their Youth National Teams.
